Revêtements antigelIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A common phenomenon concerning cold surfaces which are subjected to a warmer, more humid atmosphere is condensation in the form of water droplets (fogging) or even ice crystals (icing). Thus, a previously transparent object becomes opaque because light is scattered by the droplets or crystals. This may impair the usability of that object. We developed an anti-fogging/icing coating which overcomes the problem of fogging and icing by being able to absorb the condensing water and preventing it from crystallizing. The coating consists of poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) crosslinked by UV light using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Benzophenone (BP) is used to attach PVP to the surface of the polystyrene (PS) substrate. At temperatures as low as -60°C, the PVP coating can absorb up to 70 wt% of water and still inhibit its crystallization. However, at surface temperatures of around -18°C, opacity is only observable at 150 wt% of absorbed water and higher. An increasing coating thickness as well as a decreasing crosslink density improves the anti-fogging/icing effect because the coating can absorb more water. The abrasion resistance of the coating is impaired by a decreasing crosslink density. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Coatings process - Characterization of the coatings

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper is about rheology additives combining both performance and sustainability benefits - qualites previously as mutually exclusive.
The demand for sustainable paints and varnishes is steadily rising and consmumers are increasingly asking for coatings that combine ecological soundness with outstanding technical performance. If coatings products are to have wide appeal in the DIY and professional decorator markets, it is essential that they be easy to use, environmentally sound and provide outstanding overall performance.
Consumers demand water-based coatings that give the same surface quality as solvent-based products. They also expect easy application and spatter resistance when using rollers - and all without the product containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or posing health risks or danger to the environment. Formulators are eager to serve that demand and, naturally, have to make sure their manufacturing processes are cost-effective. To serve the demand for high-quality and environmentally sound coatings, 'smart' raw materials are necessary.Note de contenu : - High performance solutiojs

In a panel test, WorléeAqua Nail 100 was compared on women's fingernails with a standard solvent-based polish and a standard water-based nail polish. After allowing the nails to dry for one hour, a simulation of five minutes of dish washing was carried out, followed by ten rounds of rummaging in a pile of pebbles. Evaluation of the results demonstrated that the water-based nail polish base performed very well in the six categories of application, durability, drying time, smell gloss and opacity. The commercially-available water-based nail polish product received similar ratings for smell. However, it failed to compare favourably in any other category. The solvent-based polish performed less well in the categories of smell and opacity. Furthermore, determination of the pendulum hardness of nail polish made with the new aqueous acrylic polymer led to ratings similar to those of solvent-containing nail polishes. Gloss measurments like wise yielded very favourable results for the new nail polish bases. These evaluations demonstrate that use of the new nail polish bases requires no compromise in terms of durability or other characteristics, and even presents advantages in terms of smell and opacity. Accordingly, the WorléeAqua Nail series proves to be a very good alternative to solvent-based nail polish systems. Note de contenu : - New film-forming acrylic polymers for water-based nail polishes

Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Development of an antiabrasion and optical shield clearcoat for wooden art and decorative works improves its esthetic durability and lifetime. In this study, the synergistic potentials of cerium dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) were exploited to improve the abrasive, structural, and surface properties of polyurethane (PU)/silica nanocomposite coatings applied on the thermally modified spruce wood. Microhardness, adhesion strength, contact angle, and UV–Vis spectroscopy were used to evaluate the nanocomposite coatings’ surface properties. FE-SEM and EDS techniques were also employed to scrutinize distribution of NPs in the structure of nanocomposite coatings. The results showed that the abrasion resistance significantly improves by increasing the content of silica NPs. However, microhardness and performance of nanocomposite coatings containing a high percentage of silica diminished due to the aggregation of NPs and poor crosslinking of the polymer matrix. The presence of cerium dioxide NPs as a synergistic function in the PU coatings containing nano-silica enhanced the abrasion resistance as well as the glass transition temperature and caused enhanced hardness. Incorporation of cerium dioxide NPs exhibited an incremental effect on the adhesion strength of nanocomposite coatings. However, its presence in high concentration caused an adverse impact on the transparency of the nanocomposite films. In addition, wettability of PU/silica composites remained constant after incorporating high levels of cerium oxide NPs. These findings suggest that use of Ce–Si NPs hybrid/blend in the structure of PU coatings can assure the durability of wood coatings for esthetic applications and interior decoration by strengthening the surface, mechanical, and optical properties. One industry which has rapidly embraced nanotechnology as a source of innovation and product differentiation is coatings. The wide-ranging interest in nanotechnology by the coatings field is evidenced by the explosive growth. According to a global industry analysis report from 2010, nano-enabled coatings are anticipated to grow froom $6.5 billion in 2013 to $11.7 billion by 2015.
