Transmission de vapeur d'humiditéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Barrier dispersion coatings have been used to improve barrier properties of paper-based materials. Like other technologies such as thermoplastic composites, dispersion coatings include fillers to create obstacles that complicate the pathways for permeants through coatings. The development of these technologies has received significant attention where even predictive barrier performance models have been created. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of them are applicable to barrier dispersion coatings. This research proposed a mathematical model to predict the relative permeability of barrier dispersion coatings applied on paper-based materials based on Fick’s law. The uncertainty of the barrier properties due to variation in filler orientation and spatial location was included through Monte Carlo simulation. Model validation against four models previously published by other authors, and water vapor transmission rate measured on three coating formations and two coating thicknesses was also conducted. The model predictions and experimental results showed that the increase in the amount of fillers reduces the relative permeability, and this reduction can be higher if the size of the fillers is larger. The predictions agreed with experimental results particularly at volume fractions below 10%. In most of the cases, the proposed model achieved better prediction in comparison with those already published. The model is useful to predict relative barrier performance of different coating formulations and can be used as a tool for future developments. Copolymères séquencésIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The trends in hot melt adhesives (HMAs) are toward high-strength, low-viscosity systems that are stable, light in color and low in odor and can be applied at cooler temperatures at the lowest system cost. Since the adhesive polymer is responsible for the overall strength of the adhesive formulation and is generally the more expensive component, hot melt polymer design is aimed toward building maximum strength that will allow it to be formulated economically. The polymer composition, architecture and size are chosen not only for maximum strength but also to satisfy other critical adhesive parameters discussed in this article.
In the area of disposables, HMA applications challenge the formulating technology extensively, in particular those formulations based on styrenic block copolymers (SBCs). Often the SBC polymer represents less than 20% of the total adhesive system. In order to maximize the extendibility of the SBC polymer, it is important that the other formulating components are carefully chosen or designed for maximum compatibility. Of these other formulating components, the tackifier is most important, since it is often present in the formulation at three times the level of the base SBC polymer.
In this article, we will discuss synergistic styrenic block copolymer and tackifier developments that, when combined, achieve the high-performance properties required of hot melt applications in general and disposable applications in particular. We will describe the chemistry and properties of unique and patented radial polystyrenepolyisoprene (SI) copolymers and those of equally unique resin tackifiers that represent a breakthrough in light color technology. In addition, we will showcase the performance attributes of formulations based on these synergistic components.Note de contenu : - Radial, high styrene (SI)4 new polymer development
