This article is focussing on the behaviour at rest. The conventional methods are discussed : shear rate controlled or shear stress controlled rotational tests, in which the shear rate or shear stress increases in the form of a ramp to determine the apparent yield point. Another method is described to reveal the elastic behaviour of the sample below the yield stress according to Hooke's elasticity law. Further rheological information can be obtained using oscillatory tests. They should be selected to evaluate the viscoelastic character of measuring samples at rest. Note de contenu : 1. Rotational Tests : Apparent Yield Point (YP) via flow curves - Yield Point between the elastic and viscous range
2. Oscillatory tests : Amplitude Sweep(AS) - Frequency Sweep (FS)

Vernis -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The scratch resistance of four clearcoat formulations was evaluated using a CSM nano-scratch tester, an AMTEC-Kistler simulated carwash tester, and a laboratory scale macro-scratching tester. Significant differences in the rank-order of all the clearcoats were found when comparing the scratch and mar behavior using macro-scratching, nano-scratching, and AMTEC-Kistler testing. Field vehicles were also examined where the mean and median widths of scratches found on vehicles were 237 and 141 µm, respectively. The range of loads associated with events with the potential to create real-world scratches was found to be significantly higher (5-35 N) than the forces needed to make scratches of the same mean size as those seen in the field (7-10 N). These results indicated that a significant improvement in the scratch resistance of these clearcoats would be needed before customers would notice improvements in their paint finish's scratch resistance. Vernis -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The scratch resistance of polymeric clearcoats intended for automobile exterior surfaces was tested with scanning 3D nanoindentation and laboratory car wash simulation (AMTEC). It could be shown by using "real world" samples with comparable scratch resistance that the applied methods were suitable for discriminating even small differences in scratch resistance with high accuracy. In the area of physical characterization of scratch resistance, the results of this investigation demonstrate the ability of microscopic, single-contact testing methods to reproduce the macroscopically experienced results. By using a combination of different scratch methods, insight into the fundamentals, e.g., chemistry, that are responsible for good or bad scratch resistance, is achieved. One key for this goal is the imaging and analytical evaluation of the damage pattern after the indent, which leads to additional results and models presented in this article. It was found that an essential key to obtaining scratch resistant surfaces is a strengthening of rubber-like elasticity as well as minimizing interactions between individual polymeric chains.
