Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Animal hides are important agricultural commodities closely associated with rural economics and the well being of rural farmers in the United States. Approximately 90% of the hides produced in the United States are being exported; the remaining 10% are mostly tanned into leather. At the present time hides and leather are visually inspected and ranked for quality, usable area, and sale price. However, visual inspection is not reliable for detecting defects, which are usually hidden inside the material or under the hair in fresh hides. This manual assessment is not uniform among operators, and often leads to disputes over fair price. Development of a non-contact nondestructive method to accurately evaluate the quality of hides and leather is urgently needed. We previously reported the research results for airborne ultrasonic (AU) testing using non-contact transducers to evaluate the quality of hides and leather. We demonstrated the ability of AU to reveal defects in hides and leather that are difficult to be found during visual inspection. In this paper, we present new results on AU inspection, particularly using a statistical data/cluster analysis technique, in which leather and hide defects are depicted as color-coded amplitude maps, or “C-scans.” En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h39H1bn18xopLwu9IZKZ4Ewnqu4VQ7R6/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=18088

TaninsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The natural exposure and water absorption tests carried out within European Standard EN927 use clear, knot-free wood in order to minimise variability in the results. However, knots are common in practice in many coated timber components, and it is widely acknowledged that the performance of paints can be compromised over knots or timbers that possess a high tannin content. As part of the European Standard for evaluating the performance of coatings on wood, a validated method is required for evaluating the discoloration due to tannin staining and resin exudation from knots. CEN/TC139 Working Group 2 has been charged with identifying a reliable method of testing for tannin stain resistance and producing a standard; identified as EN927-7 'Resistance to tannin staining'. This paper presents results from two laboratories on an evaluation of a Trätek standard procedure. Results of discoloration are presented for panels containing knots that have been coated with one of two test coatings. Reflectance spectrometry and digital imaging-based methods of evaluating discoloration were used and an interpretation of the comparability of the techniques is provided. The suitability of the method for promoting to WG2 as a standard is presented on the basis of these results. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : QUV with spray - QUV without spray - Window exposure

Produits de nourriture du cuirIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Leather artifacts are to be found in varied archaeological and historical places (museums, storages, libraries, excavation areas). Improper environmental conditions (such as relative humidity, temperature, excess light, pollution etc.) and poor handling can affect such artifacts and lead to their increased hardness and dryness. This study aims to evaluate castor oil and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as individual materials and as a mixture at different concentrations for the lubrication of vegetable-tanned leathers. Accelerated heat ageing at different temperatures was used.
The analytical techniques used for the evaluation process were digital light microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), change of colour, attenuated total reflection - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation). Investigation of the surface morphology by microscopy proved that a low concentration of castor oil in the mixture gave good fibre distribution and the grain surface pattern was established for the treated and aged treated samples. The colour value and total colour difference of the treated and aged treated samples with a low concentration of castor oil were better than at a high concentration. ATR-FTIR proved that the castor oil and PVP mixture protects leather from deterioration as no free radicals were observed in the spectra. Mechanical property values proved that the use of the lubricant protected leather from accelerated heat ageing. It is recommended that, a mixture of castor oil and PVP with a ratio of 10:90 could be applied for the lubrication of dry vegetable-tanned leather artifacts.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Methods

One option for laying tooling involves the use of substrates that are suitable for composite part curing. These substrates may utilize secondary coatings or laminates to serve as the tool surface. In addition to thermal performance, dimensional stability, and durability, the ability to shape the substrate material to the desired geometric net shape while satisfying surface integrity requirements in the shortest period of time, at the lowest cost is of key importance. Challenges of current tooing substrates include : brittleness, porosity, and susceptibility to thermal effects, to name a few. The nature of these material characteristics makes finding optimal processing conditions for rapid fabrication a time consuming task. This work presents a method to evaluate different substrates material systems for use in composite tooling applications. Note de contenu : - TOOLING SUBSTRATE MATERIALS
