PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This study explores new applications for wood fibres through their incorporation on plastic matrices, developing high performance compounds for the automotive interior. Different automotive grades of polypropylene were reinforced with pine and eucalyptus fibres, in order to compare their properties with the specifications of different vehicle parts. The composites were produced using conventional plastics processing technologies, namely compounding with twin-screw extruder and injection molding. Mechanical properties, density, heat deflection temperature and Vicat softening point were determined. Other specific tests were carried to understand the feasibility of these composites use in automotive parts, namely fogging and flammability and also the determination of the tensile properties after climatic aging tests. The fibres morphology and its distribution and dispersion in the polymer matrices were evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that it is possible to reinforce the raw-materials using wood and achieve the high standards of the automotive industry, producing environmentally friendlier materials, through the effective reduction of the use of plastic. This work enabled important conclusions regarding the incorporation of wood into PP matrices without compromising the specifications of certain dashboard parts and it also allowed evaluating the processability of these composites. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the present work the benefits of using graphics processing units (GPU) to aid the design of complex geometry profile extrusion dies, are studied. For that purpose, a 3D finite volume based code that employs unstructured meshes to solve and couple the continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations governing the fluid flow, together with a constitutive equation, was used. To evaluate the possibility of reducing the calculation time spent on the numerical calculations, the numerical code was parallelized in the GPU, using a simple programing approach without complex memory manipulations. For verification purposes, simulations were performed for three benchmark problems: Poiseuille flow, lid-driven cavity flow and flow around a cylinder. Subsequently, the code was used on the design of two real life extrusion dies for the production of a medical catheter and a wood plastic composite decking profile. To evaluate the benefits, the results obtained with the GPU parallelized code were compared, in terms of speedup, with a serial implementation of the same code, that traditionally runs on the central processing unit (CPU). The results obtained show that, even with the simple parallelization approach employed, it was possible to obtain a significant reduction of the computation times. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) is a widely cultivated plant in Nigeria which generates lots of residues (such as its peels) during its consumption. This study investigated the tensile, microstructural and moisture absorption properties of plantain peel reinforced polystyrene composites. The filler composition was varied between 0 wt% and 40 wt% and all analyses were done as per ASTM standards. The force at break and Young's modulus increased with increasing filler content and had maximum values of 405 N and 380 MPa respectively. The elongation at break point of plantain peel powder reinforced bio-composite reduced with increase in filler content, indicating that the biomass fillers led to a reduction in the deformability of the composites due to a poor transfer of stress at the weak fiber-plastic interphase. It was furthermore observed that composites with higher filler content were more susceptible to moisture diffusivity due to the hydrophilic nature of the filler powder. Microstructural analysis revealed that a more uniform distribution of the plantain fiber occurs at 40% fiber content compared to those of higher filler content.
