RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Screening specific concentration of ingredients is a difficult job while formulating a latex paint. It is the composition of binder and various ingredients such as pigments, coalescing agents, thickeners, surfactants, wetting agents, etc. The properties of paint are highly dependent upon the property of binder and its interactions with other ingredients. Rheology is one of the important property for paint, responsible for its performance during manufacture, storage and applications. In this study we discuss the theological interactions of acrylic emulsion (AE) with coalescing agents and associative thickeners to screen these ingredients for the paint formulation. Two hydrophobic coalescing agents and three types of HEUR (hydrophobically modified ethoxylated urethane thickener) and HASE (hydrophobically modified alkali swellahle emulsion thickeners) classified as high, mid and low shear thickener with different concentration are used in this study. Flow curve, 31TT (Three Interval Thixotropy Test), Oscillatory amplitude sweep test (AS) are carried out to study the influence of these ingredients on rheology. She viscosity increases as the concentration of coalescing agent and associative thickener increases. The mechanism of interaction and efficiency of ingredients with acrylic emulsion is discussed. Substances per- et polyfluoroalkylées -- Suppression ou remplacementIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As demonstrated by two different test methods, an acrylic produced without PFAS can meet the surfactant leach resistance of a PFAS-containing acrylic developed specifically for this purpose. With one exception, other performance properties for the acrylic produced without PFAS, such as hiding power, gloss development, and dirt pick-up resistance, remained at least equivalent to those of older acrylic technologies. Although block resistance, a paint-performance property attributed to PFAS, was not as pronounced in the new acrylic produced without PFAS, performance was not completely absent. Paint performance may therefore be preserved through creative polymer design, and further modulated through formulation techniques and the incorporation of additives, effectively demonstrating that a more environmentally sound acrylic can be a viable alternative to conventional all-acrylic latexes. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The performance and appearance of pigmented waterborne coatings strongly depend on the degree to which the various particles (pigments and polymer) are dispersed throughout the dried film. The ideal state of dispersion is usually when all particles are reduced to and remain as non-flocculated primary particles.
Polymer particles, pigments and fillers, not optimally dispersed can adversely affect the ability of the coating to provide adequate barrier (to electrolytes, water, gases, etc) properties. In addition, poorly dispersed pigments and fillers can affect the ability to add colourant as well as paint colour stability under the applied shear forces that can occur during application (eg brushing and spraying).Note de contenu : - More efficient interaction between pigment and latex polymers
- Experimental design
- Improved gloss through more even pigment dispersion
- Improved hiding power
- Superior protective properties
- Improved wash and scrub resistance
- Pigment particles with superior encapsulation

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An acrylic fatty acid derivative (AcFAD) was evaluated as comonomer for promotion of oxidative cure in waterborne latexes. AcFAD was polymerized by solvent homopolymerization and copolymerization and by emulsion copolymerization, and the final products characterized. In the two polymerization processes, NMR analyses confirmed that the reaction occurred involving both the terminal acrylic double bond and the conjugated double bonds of the aliphatic chain. Compared with a reference acrylic latex, the results obtained after AcFAD incorporation showed a time-dependent increase in gel content and in solvent resistance of dry films. These were ascribed to oxidative cure and consequent self-crosslinking of the acrylic polymer, involving the conjugated double bonds in AcFAD side chains. Oxidative cure was also confirmed by FTIR analyses. In addition, reduction in minimum film-forming temperature evidenced that AcFAD has an internal plasticization effect during film formation. Incorporation of this comonomer in acrylic paint binder formulations constitutes a promising alternative to the use of volatile coalescing agents. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : 1. Materials

Ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, and ethylene glycol were showed to keep the polyacrylate latex steady when the pH values were higher than 3.00, 6.00, 3.00, and 2.50, respectively, as determined by centrifugation. The latex stability vs time was studied by Turbiscan LAB and the results are in good agreement with the change of latex particle size observed by dynamic light scattering. The results indicate that the particle size was affected by the alcohol molecular structure. Alcohol amounts and type had effects on breaking strength and elongation at break of polyacrylate film to varying degrees. The latex film-forming process was measured and morphology of the latex film was observed by scanning electron microscope. Different performances of mechanical properties were caused by the morphology of latex film resulting from the forming process.
