The multi-hollow gel and aerogel particles have strong potential in thermal insulation. Under jetting and tip-streaming regime of microfluidic flows, droplets are generated with no occluded liquid phase. The present study investigates a means of designing polyimide gel particles with plurality of internal liquid droplets by strategically manipulating the flow rates of the continuous and dispersed phase liquids through the microfluidic droplet generator. The multi-hollow polyimide aerogel particles obtained after supercritical drying of the gel particles present mesopores, high BET surface area, and excellent prospect for thermal insulation.
Surfaces (Physique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, the changes in surface roughness and thickness of particles have been investigated after coating with polymers that result in hydrophobicity after a given time period. The study fundamentally investigates the evolution of these surface properties from the instant the particles are coated. Six chemical agents have been used on near-spherical glass beads and the changes in surface profiles monitored. Surface roughness was quantified using the power spectral density method and the surface thickness of the coatings was determined by a new technique which involved calculating the change in the representative radius of asperity. Results showed that the coating process altered the surface roughness and thickness of particles irrespective of chemicals used. The time-dependency of the coating process is illustrated and it was observed that fluctuations in both surface roughness and thickness lessened after a time period of 30 min. Depending on the chemical agent used, either an overall roughening or softening was recorded at 60 min and the values of surface thickness showed increases between 71 and 256 nm. By analyzing the evolution of surface roughness and thickness at the particle level following coating, this study demonstrated the intricate link between surface properties and chemistry in inducing functional properties on particles.

ToucherIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Nano sized aminofunctional and micron sized dimethyl polysiloxane emulsions were applied to garment leathers as topcoats, to investigate the improvement on feel touch permanency of finished leathers. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and particle size analysis of these two polysiloxane emulsions were carried out. The optimum application amount of emulsions was determined to be 15% based on the results of organoleptic evaluation and dynamic friction coefficients. After the application of nano and micron sized polysiloxane, three different accelerated ageing processes were applied to leathers under controlled temperature, humidity and UV light conditions. For determining the effect of the ageing processes on these polysiloxanes, dynamic friction coefficient measurements, ICP-OES and SEM analysis were carried out. The results revealed that nano sized polysiloxanes clearly improved the feel touch permanency of finished leathers in comparison to the leathers coated with micron sized polysiloxanes. Thereby, it was demonstrated that nano polysiloxanes can maintain the appearance and feel touch of leather product for a longer periods of time.
