Polyurethane dispersions are made by reacting di-functional polyols with di-functional isocyanates and dispersing them in water. The polyols can be polyether, polyester, polycarbonate, or even natural oil baed (linseed oil, castor oil, etc.). The isocyanates can be HDI, IPDI, or MDI. By varying the polyol and isocyanate, you get varying properties. The alternating hard and soft segments of the PUD give hardness, elasticity, and toughness. Acrylics being thermoplastic are either soft and flexible or hard and brittle. Note de contenu : - Formulation

This growth is related to cost reduction attributed to improved efficiency, time savings, fewer production steps and enhanced sustainability. These coatings are used in the heavy construction industry, building products and product finishing. Many of these applications require performance in demanding exposure conditions. Covestro has been able to provide solvent free aqueous polyurethane dispersions Bayhydrol which give the coating manufacturers a broad range of freedom to formulate their coatings and help them to surpass demands of current VOC and performance requirements.

Increasing environmental and legislative pressure over the years, has led to a gradual shift from solvent-based polyurethanes towards waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs). Although significantly more environmentally friendly, most waterborne PUDs still require the use of some solvent for processing and coalescing purposes. For many years the solvent of choice has been n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), however, this solvent is now under threat due to impending legislation within EU, which requires it to be re-classified as a developmental Toxicant (R61, risk during pregnancy of harmful effects for the child) at levels > 5%. This re-classification is expected to have a significant impact on PUD technology and in turn the coatings industry. To combat this future legislation, Industrial Copolymer Ltd has developed a series of NMP-free PUDs to aid the coatings industry in their quest for safer and sustainable future.Note de contenu : - THE USE OF NMP IN PUD MANUFACTURE
