This study investigated the effects of applying an intumescent coating with nanoclay and different amounts of Cloisite 15A (1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%) on 4-mm plywood panels. The nanoclay coating had a lower total heat release and peak heat release rate than other approaches, and it significantly enhanced the fire retardancy of painted plywood. In addition, nanoclay treated with an organic modifier has better flame retardancy than unmodified nanoclay. Another critical parameter in this study was the concentration of organoclay added to the intumescent coating. Cloisite 15A at a concentration of 1% further enhanced the fire retardancy of plywood. A higher organoclay concentration can reduce CO emissions ; however, it also increases CO2 emissions during combustion. The intumescent char layers containing 1% and 3% organoclay had the most extensive phosphocarbonaceous structures according to Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy and 27Al and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. Regarding the mechanism of fire performance and CO/CO2 emissions, the addition of 1% and 3% Cloisite 15A to intumescent coatings is recommended; it achieved superior performance to Cloisite 15A at a higher concentration (i.e., 10%).

In GJF method, the shear and extensional forces of high-velocity gas jets are used to spin fibers from polymer solutions. The correlation between polymer molecular weight and fiber diameter distribution is studied along with the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on fiber diameter distribution. The paper also assesses how carbon nanotubes distribute in bi-component polymer nanofibers. It is found that polymer chain entanglement is a key determinant of fiber diameter. MWCNTs do not show preference for distribution in polyvinylidene pyrrole (PVP) and polyvinylacetate (PVAc) and instead appear on the surfaces of the fibers. A negative value of spreading coefficient supports this observation. Note de contenu : - Diameter and morphology of PEO nanofibers and microfibers by GJF method

Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Comb‐like polycarboxylates were synthesised by copolymerisation of methacrylic acid and nonylphenol polyethylene glycol methacrylate ester, and can be used as dye dispersants. In order to achieve good dispersive ability, three polycarboxylates were synthesised, each having a different side chain density. The side chain density of polymers was controlled by different ratios of monomers in the copolymerisation process. Acidic polymers were neutralised using sodium hydroxide. These polymers exhibit good dispersing performance, such that carboxylate groups are adsorbed onto the dye particle surface and the side chains enable the formation of a thick layer, thus providing the steric hindrance effect. Improvement of dye dissolution in the presence of polycarboxylates was studied. Polymers with a lower side chain density demonstrated a higher dye dissolution in water, which could be as a result of more effective adsorption of dispersant on the dye surface (CI Disperse Blue 79). The dyeing performance of the prepared dye dispersions on polyester was investigated. Spectrophotometric analysis of dyed fabrics using synthesised polycarboxylates demonstrates that there should be an optimum side chain density of polymer in order to control both dye solubility and dispersive ability. The result of turbidimetry and particle size analysis have proven this phenomenon. A comb‐like polycarboxylate with optimum side chain density was a better dye dispersant compared with a commercial sodium naphthalene sulphonate compound, as a result of its better heat stability. Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Polymeric materials may be applied to the surface of leather, as so-called finishes, to improve the appearance and performance characteristics of the substrate. The polymers used may be natural or synthetic in origin and are applied as solutions in organic solvents or as water-based emulsions. The latter systems are usually formed from acrylic polymers and are produced as spherical particles, dispersed in an aqueous phase, by the technique of emulsion polymerisation.
Transmission electron miroscopy has been used extensively to study the fine structure of leather and to characterise emulsion commonly used in leather finishing. However, with the exception of a single micrograph shown by Kanagy, studies of combined leather-polymer systems have not been carried out using this technique.
This article indicates a method of preparing leather-polymer systems for study in the electron microscope, giving information on the forces of interaction operative between the species present.Note de contenu : Methods : Variation of time of contact between leather fibres and polymer particles - Variation of emulsion type and pH of leather-latex systems

Furthermore 100% solids crosslinkable hot melt acrylic technology is predicted to grow significantly at the expense of the remaining solvent acrylic and rubber-based systems.
