In this work, we aimed to obtain capsules smaller than 1 µm containing an appropriate amount of oil seeking to provide efficient self-healing. A modification in the route of synthesis of self-healing coating capsules is proposed. This modification of a typical synthesis route, which consisted of introducing an additional mechanical agitation step before adding a formaldehyde aqueous solution, was used to entrap linseed oil as a healing agent in poly(urea–formaldehyde). Hence, two synthesis routes were investigated: one involving mechanical agitation at high-speed rotation and another which combines mechanical and ultrasonic agitation. The capsules obtained by agitation had average sizes of 0.35 ± 0.13 and 0.37 ± 0.19 µm and an oil content of 80 ± 2.2 and 77 ± 1.7 wt%, respectively. Both were incorporated, separately, into an epoxy resin matrix, and the composite was applied onto ASTM A36 steel plates for evaluation of healing crack filling performance and accelerated corrosion testing. Scanning electron microscope images showed that the two coatings had a similar healing effect, mainly due to their similar estimated oil content. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As a significant method to inhibit metal corrosion by blocking the diffusion of corrosive mediums to the metal surface, the anticorrosion coating with a self-healing function can actively repair a damaged structure and improve the anticorrosion performance to better meet actual needs. In this study, “external aid” and “intrinsic triggering” self-healing coatings have been introduced in detail, including the preparation method, healing mechanism and practical applications. The healing of “external aid” is based on the addition components such as microcapsules containing healing agents and functional nanoparticles, whose ability of self-healing shows the independence with the coating resin. But the finitely additive amount may limit the sustainable use of “external aid” components, and the abundant fillers also change the basic physical properties of the coating. On the contrary, the “intrinsic triggering” resins can form the cover layer in the defects owing to the physical or chemical reactions between the polymer chains, along with the unlimited cycles theoretically. By contrast, the small defects or gaps can be repaired gradually through chain reactions, but the large areas of damage may need the quick release of healing additives in “external aid” coating. In this review, the advances of two kinds of self-healing coatings were analyzed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various healing technologies, and the challenges of development and prospects were also forecasted to provide useful ideas. In this work, a modified polyurethane coating with the self-healing function is developed via the reaction between polytetrahydrofuran (PTMG), 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and α-lipoic acid. The coatings are characterized by SEM and FTIR. The protection of the prepared coating for copper in 3 wt.% NaCl solution is investigated by the electrochemical measurements and the surface self-healing tests. The coating has stable protection from corrosion of the copper substrate in corrosive medium and shows a good self-healing ability. The healing behavior in morphology and corrosion resistance can be observed when heated above 60°C.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The self-healing anticorrosion property of coating containing cyclodextrins/inhibitor nanocontainers was investigated by SEM, TEM, salt spray, and EIS measurements. The influences of cyclodextrin type (α-CD, β-CD and γ-CD) and nanocapsules diameter on the anticorrosive performance of the scratched samples were studied under salt spray conditions, which revealed that the coatings containing γ-CD/inhibitor nanocontainers with larger nanocapsules at room temperature demonstrated the best anticorrosion behavior. Inclusion complex formation of MBI or MBT with CDs led to encapsulated corrosion inhibitors which became active in corrosive electrolytes, and could slowly diffuse out of the host material to ensure continuous delivery of the inhibitors to corrosion sites and long-term corrosion protection. Additionally, the kinetics of the self-healing process characterized by EIS measurement was parametrically analyzed in an equivalent circuit when the coating was exposed to salt solution. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, type and amount of emulsifier, core/shell mass ratio, and initial pH on the microcapsule structure and properties were studied, and the optimal preparation process of the two-component microcapsules was obtained. On this basis, the shell stability of the microcapsules was enhanced by adding graphene oxide (GO), and the added content of GO was optimized by means of microscopic observation. The results show that the optimal preparation process of the two-component microcapsules is as follows: The stirring speed is 500 r/min, the temperature is 55°C, the amount of polyvinyl alcohol is 5 g, core/shell mass ratio is 1.25:1, the initial pH is 3, the added amount of GO is 0.3 wt%, and the encapsulation rate of the prepared microcapsules was as high as 83.44%. Subsequently, different contents of graphene-based two-component microcapsules were embedded into the epoxy coating, and the best ones were optimized by self-healing performance test (scratch test) and anticorrosion performance test (salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The experimental results show that the impedance modulus of the damaged graphene-based two-component self-healing coating after repair can reach 1.29 × 109 Ω cm2, and the repair process can last for 24 h.
