RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The process of dispersing filler in polymer matrix is vital to the behavior of polymer composites. The current study involves understanding the extent of dispersion of filler by only varying the nature of mixing during the process. Identical polymer composite materials are processed via two different kinds of mixing sections on the screw in a twin-screw extruder, differing in the type and amount of stress they impose on the filler agglomerate. An aggressive (900) Kneading Block (KB) mixing section is compared with recently developed Extensional Mixing Elements (EMEs), which impart extension dominated mixing while KB imparts shear dominated mixing. Various EME geometries of different levels of aggressiveness were computationally studied and validated. Composites obtained from KB are compared with composites processed using five different EME geometries. Three composites of Polypropylene (PP) filled with carbon black, graphene nano platelets and carbon nanotubes were studied independently. Composites processed through EMEs display about an order of magnitude better dispersion of filler agglomerate over the composites processed through KB. In addition, enhanced modulus and yield stress is observed for composites processed through EMEs. An improvement of 63% to 266% in the strain achieved for EME processed composites is seen under biaxial film stretching. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Globally the trend is towards waterborne paints and paint industry is experiencing strong need of deriving maximum performance benefit through the interactions of the key building blocks of the formulations. The high PVC (pigment volume concentration) waterborne paints are very important in Indian context and thus needs more attention for the researchers and business equally. In typical high PVC waterborne paint the end performances are governed by the surface interactions of inorganic fillers and surfactant molecules causing various morphologies, surface conditioning and particle packing. These parameters in turn have profound effect on the end performances of coatings which include self-stability, rheology, optical properties, flow and levelling and mechanical properties of the dried film.
In the present study, surfactants with varied molecular weights, functional groups, molecular arch itect and polarities are employed to understand the interactions with varied inorganic particulates commonly used in paint (carbonates, sulphates, silicates). The performance of the various experimental sets demonstrates the strong co-relation of the surfactant properties on the interactions with the inorganic particulates. Thus the trend analysis is useful tool for the formulator to strategize the composition for gain i ng maximum from the suitable interactions.Note de contenu : - OBJECTIVE

Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Graphene stacks/epoxy nanocomposites were produced and characterized in order to analyse the effect of different graphene precursors on cure reaction of a model epoxy matrix. A kinetic analysis of the cure mechanism of the epoxy resin associated to the catalytical activity of the graphite based fillers was performed by isothermal DSC measurements. The DSC results showed that the addition of all graphite based fillers greatly increased the enthalpy of epoxy reaction and the reaction rate, confirming the presence of a catalytic activity of graphitic layers on the crosslinking reaction between the epoxy resin components (epoxide oligomer and di-amine). A kinetic modelling analysis, arising from an autocatalyzed reaction mechanism, was finally applied to isothermal DSC data, in order to predict the cure mechanism of the epoxy resin in presence of the graphite based nanofiller. Fibres de bambousIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : With the growing apprehension about ecology and economics, the composite materials based on low-cost lignocellulosic biomass have generated a great interest of research. In this paper, a polymer composite has been developed using specific grade epoxy matrix and “particular micron size” bamboo filler and its different mechanical properties have been investigated. The mechanical properties were determined with a variation in different constraints like filler content, strain rate, temperature and chemical treatment to establish the applicability of the developed composite. From the results, it has been found that the static and dynamic mechanical properties of the developed composite are significantly influenced by the different parameters. The scanning electron micrographs demonstrated the even dispersion of particulate fillers in the matrix, agglomeration at higher filler loading and better adhesion due to alkali treatment. Also, the properties are comparable with the existing different bamboo based composite.
