ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The leather industry, in spite of using by-products of the meat industry, is also a potential pollutant, as it generates solid and liquid wastes. In the traditional manufacturing process, chromium may be present in a large part of such wastes. A lot of research has been made in order to find ways to valorize these wastes, although for crust and finishing leather trimmings more work is needed to show their potential. The aim of the present investigation is to create useful products through the pyrolysis of waste leather trimmings. The experiments were performed in a vertical semi-batch reactor with ID of 9.7 cm. The influence of operating temperature (490 – 800°C) and heating rate on the composition and distribution of the different phases (solid, liquid and gas) was studied. The gas and the liquid fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography and FTIR, respectively. The char obtained was characterized in terms of its higher heating value and proximate analysis. In addition, the thermal degradation of the leather waste was followed using thermogravimetric analysis.
As the temperature increased, the yields of char and gas phase decreased and increased, respectively. The yield of the liquid phase was almost constant for 490 and 610°C, and decreased for higher temperatures. The effect of heating rate on the yields of pyrolysis products was almost negligible. The amount of chromium oxide in the char tended to increase with increasing temperatures. The FTIR analysis of bio-oils indicated the presence of phenols and alcohols, alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds. GC analysis of the gas phase indicated that CO2 was the most abundant gas at 490°C, while hydrogen presented higher concentrations at bed temperatures of 610, 700 and 800°C.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Material - Thermogravimetric analysis - Experimental set-up - Solid, liquid and gas phase characterization

Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this research, reactive blending of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polypropylene (PP) was studied. Grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto TPU/PP blends was performed by a twin-screw extruder in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). Mechanical properties and morphology of the blends were investigated by tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Thermal properties of the blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained results were compared with those of the uncompatibilized blends and the blends compatibilized with a commercial maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA). The results from the uncompatibilized blends clearly indicate that the TPU and PP are immiscible resulting in undesirable properties of the blends. These properties were improved significantly when TPU and PP were reactive-blended in the presence of MAH and DCP. When comparing with the blends compatibilized with PP-g-MA, the blends prepared by the reactive blending technique possessed better mechanical properties.
ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The 500°F and 550°F thermal stabilities of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), MQ siloxane resin and methyl silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives were evaluated.
Significant weight loss, reduction in the molecular weight and the broadening of its distribution characterize the reaction of linear PDMS polymer to thermaloxidative exposure. In contrast to PDMS polymer, the MQ siloxane resin exhibited only slight weight loss in the high-temperature exposures. The addition of special stabilizers in only parts-per-million levels proved highly effective for improving the thermal stability of the PDMS polymer.
For a typical unstabilized methyl silicone PSA, peel and probe tack adhesion properties were substantially degraded upon thermal exposures at 500°F. The parts-per-million addition of stabilizers to these compositions significantly improved their ability to resist thermal degradation of adhesives properties.
The isothermal weight loss process of the thermally exposed cured adhesives appears to be of first-order kinetics.Note de contenu : - Silicone PSAs

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A large amount of cork powder (CP) produced by cork industry ended up in landfills, they are the result of the crushing of natural floor (bark) cork oak, hence the need to recycle these wastes to prevent environmental problems. To this end, the work is to combine the powdered cork recovered with a thermoplastic material to provide a cork based composite (CPC) having physico-mechanical characteristics and thermal very interesting. Several formulations of composite materials based on PVC (as matrix), cork powder (as a charge) and a PVC-g-MA coupling agent, have been the subject of experimental study to evaluate the physical-mechanical and thermal properties. To investigate the combined effect of cork powder and PVC-g-MA on composite properties, the samples were manufactured by varying the content of PC (30 %, 40 % and 50 %) with two PVC-g-MA concentrations. Improving the stability of PVC which is accentuated in the presence of the coupling agent. In addition, it was found that the incorporation of the coupling agent has enabled the elimination of the adverse effect of cork powder, improving the tensile strength. The composite obtained in this study yielded some promising properties, even if building strategies to achieve greater strength and rigidity could beings needed for specific applications.
