ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The majority of native starch is used in the food sector and in the paper industry. Only a small amount is used in polymer engineering. One reason for the reluctance of the plastics processing industry to use starch as a filling material in polymer blends is the unsatisfactory mechanical behavior of starch when combined with thermoplastics. Another reason is the hydrophilicity of starch. In order to make these materials capable of competing, an amelioration of the mechanical properties is compulsory. By means of modifying the native starch and optimizing the compounding process, it is possible to improve the performance of starch blends, and, thus, increase the number of application areas of these materials. For this reason, native starch was modified with a cross-linking agent using a laboratory mixer. Subsequently, the modified starch and poly(lactic acid) were compounded using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. Cross-linking of the native starch in the laboratory mixer resulted in an increase in the mechanical strength of the starch blends. In addition, the blends with cross-linked starch displayed lower moisture absorption levels than blends with native starch as a filling material. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polycarbonate (PC)/cerium (IV) oxide (CeO2) composites are prepared by a melt-compounding method using a twin-screw extruder. The effect of the CeO2 content on the damping property of the composites was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, the composites' mechanical properties were studied through tensile and impact tests. The DMA results revealed that the addition of CeO2 (0.5 wt%) improved the damping property of the composite. TGA showed that the thermal stability was improved when the CeO2 became 1 wt%. Mechanical tests revealed that both the tensile and impact strengths were substantially improved when 1 wt% CeO2 was added. Finally, it can be concluded that the 0.5 wt% CeO2-filled PC composite can be used as a structural damping material. Titre : Design, synthesis and characterization of linear unnatural amino acids for skin moisturization Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : N. R. Arezki, Auteur ; Adrian C. William, Auteur ; A. J. A. Cobb, Auteur ; M. B. Brown, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 72-82 Note générale : Bibliogr.

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Objectives : This work aimed to design, synthesize and characterize replacement natural moisturizing factor (NMF) composed of modified hygroscopic linear amino acids to pre-empt or repair skin barrier dysfunction.
Methods : Following synthesis and characterization, thermo-gravimetric analysis and quantum mechanics molecular modelling quantified and depicted water binding to the new compounds. Deliquescence relative humidity demonstrated the water-scavenging ability of the compounds, whereas snake skin moisturizing studies showed they increased water uptake into snake skin.
Results : From thermal analysis, N-hydroxyglycine showed greatest water-holding capacity followed by N-hydroxyserine, l-homoserine and ?-hydroxyglycine; coupled with quantum mechanics molecular modelling, between 8 and 12 molecules of water could associate with each molecule of either N-hydroxyglycine, N-hydroxyserine or l-homoserine. All of our modified amino acids were efficacious and induced similar or greater water uptake compared with the established moisturizing compounds hyaluronic acid, glycerine and urea in snake skin. Incorporated at 10% in Oilatum, N-hydroxyserine induced >200% greater moisture uptake into dry snake skin compared to treatment with water alone, with efficacy related to the molecule structure and ability to bind to 12 water molecules. Oilatum cream spiked with all our unnatural amino acid hydrotropes increased water uptake into snake skin compared with Oilatum alone.
The compound series was designed to elucidate some structure – efficacy relationships. Amino acid chirality did not affect the water-holding capacity but did affect uptake into skin. Compounds with high melting points and bond energies tended to decrease water-holding capacity. With isosteric replacement, the more electronegative atoms gave greater water-holding capacities.
Conclusions : This work demonstrates the potential of unnatural amino acid hydrotropes as skin moisturizers and has developed some predictive 'rules' for further design and refinement of chemical structures.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Synthesis of modified linear amino acids - Deliquescence relative humidity - Themogravimetric analysis - (TGA) - Quantum mechanics molecular modeling (QMMM) - Snake skin moisturizing study - Statistical analysis

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Wood plastic composites, also called wood polymer compounds, consist of wood, polymers and additives. These compounds have gained increasing acceptance over the past years. While currently they are mainly used in non-structural components such as decking or automotive interior elements, other applications fields including furniture, technical parts or consumer goods are becoming increasingly interesting. Thermal analysis methods such as thermogravimetry (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and dilatometry (DIL) are very helpful in characterising the properties of WPC materials.
