Traitement rouleau à rouleauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this paper, a multilayer barrier thin film, based on polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)–silicon dioxide (SiO2), has been fabricated on a PET substrate through a novel method of joint fabrication techniques. The inorganic SiO2 thin film was deposited using a roll-to-roll atmospheric atomic layer deposition system (R2R-AALD), while the organic PVDF layer was deposited on the surface of SiO2 through the electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) technique. The multilayer barrier thin films exhibited very good surface morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties. The obtained values for arithmetic surface roughness and water contact angle of the as-developed multilayer barrier thin film were 3.88 nm and 125°, respectively. The total thickness of the multilayer barrier thin film was 520 nm with a high optical transmittance value (85–90%). The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the barrier thin film was ~ 0.9 × 10−2 g m−2 day−1. This combination of dual fabrication techniques (R2R-AALD and EHDA) for the development of multilayer barrier thin films is promising for gas barrier applications. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The performance of a material in a biological environment is mediated by its surface properties and by the combination of physical and mechanical properties that are required for a specific application. The more relevant surface properties in these respects include its chemical structure (hydrophilicity and the presence of functional groups that could initiate reactions in biological systems) and the morphology (the distribution and abundance of hydrophilic/hydrophobic phases, crystalline/amorphous phases and surface topographical assets). In surface modification, one aims to tailor the surface characteristics of a material toward a specific application without detrimentally affecting the bulk properties. This strategy allows for an increase in the success of implants’ application by increasing their lifetime. In this review, several approaches to the surface modification of polymers are described, as are a number of viable applications. Unlike the feedblocks used in conventional coextrusion, the apparatus consists of a stirring rod, which stretches and folds the polymer components. On rotating the stirring rod, the lower viscosity phase migrates to high shear regions (stirring rod surface), thereby contributing to the formation of a multilayer structure. The desired multilayer structure was achieved at the optimum stirring speed (0.013 m s−1), volumetric flow rate of LDPE (5.8 × 10−6 m3 s−1), and volumetric flow rate of PA6 (1.5 × 10−6 m3 s−1). The LDPE/PA6 multilayer film had higher tensile and puncture resistance properties compared to that produced from conventional coextrusion, indicating the potential of the proposed apparatus for multilayer polymer film production.

Rayons gammaIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The pattern surface structure of a thin blend polymer film of Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) – Poly ethylene glycol (PEG) induced by Ar+ ion etching (5 keV) has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Blend polymer films have been obtained consisting of a hydrophilic PEG and a hydrophobic PMMA distributed in co-continuous phases. Four different compositions of the two polymers are dissolved in chloroform and irradiated with gamma rays (60Co) at 20 kGy to produce transparent films of blend polymer PMMA-PEG after casting. Self-assembled of PMMA-PEG film is obtained because of the high contrast between the two polymers. Ion-polymer interaction with a hydrophilic polymer (Ar+ +PEG) rather than the high etch resistance of hydrophobic polymer (Ar+ ?PMMA) was observed. The results are discussed in terms of significant destruction of bonds in the blend polymer films as a result of which one polymer undergoes rapid dissociation rather than the other one. This means that etching with Ar+ ions of the PMMA domains are stable and PEG can be selective. The ATR-FTIR spectrum shows the absence of hydrogen bonds and XRD/DSC curves show the crystanility of PMMA depending on the PEG contents and gamma radiation effect, irradiated blend polymer PMMA/PEG has shown more resistant at thermal degradation than irradiated PMMA. This indicates that the PEG contents have an effect on the thermal stability of PMMA/PEG as detected by TGA. Finally, the pattern surface of irradiated blend polymer (PMMA-2%PEG) was plated with two coaxial layers subsequently of copper (Cu) and silver (Ag) using sputter technique. Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Mathematical relationships to calculate the stress in each layer of a multicoat system are derived. They were verified for a bi- and a trilayer acrylic/melamine system by comparing the thermal stress values determined from the derived equations with those calculated from an equation which requires the knowledge of the layers’ properties (elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and glass transition temperature).Experimental procedures for coating systems unaffected and affected by multiple application and curing are described, and a few cases met in practice are presented. This study should provide a better understanding of the interactions between various layers of a multicoat system, and the damage (delamination, cracking) which might result from them.
