While the time-honored “weight ratios” are typically used to formulate pigmented coatings for paper, pigment volume concentration (or alternatively, % void volume) has been found to be much more useful in determining the interactions of pigments with the adhesive on the properties of such aqueous coatings. In this study, slurries of commercial kaolin clay and ground calcium carbonate pigments used in papermaking applications were blended and then centrifuged to determine the maximum packing efficiency of the pigments. Isolated films of coatings made from selected pigment blends and increasing levels of latex adhesive were tested for void volume percentage and tensile modulus. Based on these results, a regression equation between pigment interstitial space and the mechanical strength of different coating films was established. Therefore, it is indispensable to find evaluation methods with high correlations with the human visual system to assess the quality of the printed images. Standard ISO/IEC 24790 is one of the recommended standards to achieve this goal. An evaluation procedure for graininess, a common defect in printing, has been presented in this standard; however, this procedure is suggested only for monochrome printed images. Hence, in this research, the graininess of coloured samples is evaluated based on the proposed method in this standard with considering the effect of the paper. For this purpose, fictitious graininess defects are designed and applied on coloured samples and are printed on different papers. A visual assessment is performed to examine the effect of colour and paper differences on graininess. Six different methods, including the method suggested in the standard and the proposed modified procedures, are used to evaluate graininess, and their results are compared to subjective results. Moreover, three other wavelets are studied besides the suggested one in the standard. To eliminate the effect of paper texture, a Gaussian filter is utilised. The results show that applying the Gaussian filter to images increases the correlation between computational procedure results and visual assessment results. Also, the results indicate that utilising haar wavelet slightly increases the correlation. The results demonstrate that besides assessing graininess in greyscale mode, evaluating graininess in RGB (red, green, blue) colour space results in a high correlation with the visual assessment results. Polycaprolactone nanocomposites with different concentrations of nanoparticles were prepared and coated onto three types of papers: uncoated, low‐coated and gloss. The main aim was to analyse the influence of the nanoparticle concentration in primer on the optical and colorimetric properties of cyan and magenta offset printed samples. To further evaluate the applicability of the primers, the tensile strength of primed samples and their surface properties were analysed. Results show that prepared primers are primarily applicable on uncoated and low coated papers. Both nanoparticles in specific concentrations increased gloss values for printed samples on low‐coated paper, and the addition of both types of nanoparticles increased the rub resistance of printed samples. Furthermore, for each type of nanoparticle, the optimal concentration at which the colour deviation on print was minimised could be defined. Adding nanoparticles to primers did not significantly improve mottling on cyan‐printed samples. However, by increasing the concentration of nanoparticles in the primer by up to 1%, the mottling on magenta‐printed samples decreased. The novel collagen product obtained in this manner was tested as paper sizing agent. The structure and properties of modified collagen were characterized by FTIR, STA and XRD. Results indicate that polyvinyl chains were grafted onto collagen, primarily in its crystalline regions. This modification significantly improved the thermal stability of collagen. Then the modified collagen emulsion alone (MCE), or combined either with gelatinized starch (MCE+S) or commercially produced styrene-acrylic emulsion (MCE+SAE), was applied to the surface of corrugating medium. The properties of these products were compared with those of commercially produced medium sized by SAE+S. Sizing by (MCE+S) increased the ring crush index by 12.7% and tensile index by 13.4%. In a Cobb60 test the corrugating medium sized by a blend of modified collagen and styrene acrylic emulsion (MCE+SAE) absorbed less water than commercially produced medium sized by SAE+S.
