Tannage Résumé : The comminuted bark of Acacia mangium was extracted with acetone solution, and the extract was then degreased with petroleum ether. The degreased solution was extracted by diethyl ether and ethyl acetate successively. In this way, the tannin of Acacia mangium was divided into the diethyl ether fraction, the ethyl acetate fraction, and the water fraction, respectively. The tannin molecular weight of these fractions was measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and the particle sizes of tannin were examined by a Zetasizer ZS instrument. The results showed that the ether fraction consisted of the smallest molecules with an average molecular weight of 415Da possessing weak tanning ability but having a fast penetration rate. The molecular weight of the ethyl acetate fraction was 1788Da which showed significant tanning ability. The molecular weight of the water fraction was 2808Da with better tanning ability, and the biggest particle size was shown by this tannin. The thermal stability of the hide powder and cowhide tanned by these tannins was as follows: water fraction > ethyl acetate fraction > diethyl ether fraction; the order of penetration was : diethyl ether fraction > ethyl acetate fraction > water fraction. These results could provide a valuable reference for the use of the Acacia mangium tannin. Note de contenu : - Materials

This makes it very difficult to decide from gel permeation chromatography (GPC) alone whether a substance complies with the REACH polymer definition. Therefore, in parallel to the real in vitro syntheses, we simulated the preparation of polycondensation and polyaddition resins by means of well-known Monte Carlo methods. The output of these simulations (basically a list of all the molecules formed, their molecular weights, and their relative quantities) was used to simulate a GPC. The simulation parameters (reaction types and relative reaction rates) were adapted until a good match between the measured and the simulated GPC was obtained. The simulation was then considered trustworthy. This appeared to be a strong tool to judge if a product is a polymer according to REACH, EPA, or emerging worldwide legislation.

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new class of silicone has been developed for coatings or as coating additives. Cycloaliphatic silane monomers were prepared and reacted into more easily handled cyclic oligomers. These cyclic oligomers were ring-opened into siloxane polymers. The polymers were functionalized with a variety of groups, including: amino, glycidyl epoxide, cyclohexene epoxide, acrylic, and alkoxysilane. The cycloaliphatic silicones have been designed for a number of different curing conditions: (1) ambient temperature-cure (amino and glycidyl epoxide), (2) cationic ultraviolet (UV)-cure (cyclohexene epoxide), (3) radical UV-cure (acrylic), and (4) moisture-cure (alkoxysilane). The end usages thus far have been focused on silicone coatings; however, usage as coating additives will be a focus for future research. The cycloaliphatic silicone has been UV-cured with mixed sol–gel precursors for usage as aerospace coatings. The cycloaliphatic silicones have also been ambient temperature-cured for release coatings, and have application as anti-fouling coatings. The inherent low surface energy makes the cycloaliphatic silicones prime candidates for surface tension additives. Structure moléculaireIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyesters was prepared to evaluate hydrolytic stability as a function of cyclohexyl dibasic acid content. The three cyclohexyl dibasic acids: 1,2; 1,3; and 1,4 were formulated into polyesters with two glycols. The proportion of cis and trans isomers was evaluated via 1H NMR. The hydrolytic stability of short chain polyesters was evaluated in an acetone/water mixture which solubilized the polyesters to mimic oligoester behavior within a thermosetting polyester coating environment. The rate of hydrolysis was monitored by acid titration and corroborated by GPC. Surprisingly, 1,2-cyclohexyl diacid-based polyesters were robust, and 1,3-cyclohexyl diacid-based polyesters were the most susceptible to hydrolysis. Evidently, a 1,2-anchimeric effect for cyclohexyl dibasic acid polyesters was not an important consideration, while the 1,3-cyclohexyl ester interaction was. Consequently, an anomeric effect was proposed. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Surfactants as essential auxiliaries are used in almost all chemical processes in leather production. In this work, a series of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants (Fn-Fn, where n = 2, 4, or 6) were successfully prepared and used as fatliquoring auxiliaries in the fatliquoring process of chrome-tanned goat skin. The chemical structure of these nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants was characterized by FTIR and the molecular weight was determined by GPC. The surface tension measurement results revealed that these three fluorinated surfactants showed excellent surface activities. The effect of type and dosage of Fn-Fn as well as fatliquoring temperature on fatliquoring properties of chrome-tanned goat skin were estimated by the softness and physical mechanical properties characteristic of resultant leather. The results revealed that the leather treated with 1 wt% F4-F4 at the fatliquoring temperature of 40oC showed the best overall performance, whose softness and physical mechanical properties were improved significantly. Moreover, the collagen fiber morphology and waterproof performance of leather treated with Fn-Fn were also investigated which showed that the addition of Fn-Fn in the fatliquoring process could promote the loosening of collagen fibers while effectively enhancing the water repellency of the leather surface. Therefore, such types of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants are promising to be as desired fatliquoring auxiliaries in the leather industry.
