Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) structures are commonly manufactured using hand layup, vacuum bag and vacuum infusion process (VIP) which are cost effective techniques. This paper compares the tensile strength, modulus, inter-laminar bonding and surface macroscopy of GFRP composites made by hand layup, vacuum bag and VIP process. For this reason, at first GFRP sample were manufactured using these three methods and then tested for tensile properties. In the next step, these samples were modeled numerically and compared. The results show that the strength of the sample made by VIP process is 20 % higher than the hand layup and 11 % higher than vacuum bag sample. Also, the modulus of the sample achieved using VIP is 21 % higher that hand layup and 15% higher than vacuum bag technique. By comparing the failure mechanism of the samples, it was observed that the inter-laminar bonding is highest in VIP and then vacuum bag and lastly hand layup due to a smaller number of voids. Lastly the numerical results showed to have a good agreement with the experimental results. Note de contenu : - Material

Typically made by reacting polyols with diisocyanates, PU chemistry has inherent versatility through the wide range of both types of monomers available for use, but as with most polymers, these are mostly derived from fossil fuel-based building blocks. Those working at the forefront of PU chemistry are now transitioning to a palette of bio-derived alternatives to enable society's continuing use of these valuable materials and simultaneously access new performance profiles. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We report on a simple and large-scale method for the fabrication of mechanically durable superhydrophobic coatings via electrostatic powder spray of aerogel micro particles on the fibrous substrates. The coatings are obtained by dip-coating fibrous substrates in silicon rubber/toluene solution, followed by the electrostatic spray of aerogel micro particles on the samples. The method is applicable to a large number of fibrous substrates with different pore sizes. Depending on the silicon rubber solution concentration, it is possible to obtain surfaces with hierarchical morphology. The wetting behavior dependent on the concentration of silicon rubber/toluene solution can provide coatings with static water contact angles (160°–168°) and sliding angles (3°–21°). Fibrous surfaces obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and static water contact angle measurement. Also, mechanical durability of the surfaces was examined using high pressure airflow, sandpaper abrasion test, and water static pressure.

Textiles et tissusIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A simple sol–gel method was proposed to fabricate superhydrophobic cotton fabric (S-fabric) with a water contact angle of 155.6°. A co-condensation process between zirconium hydroxide (Zr(OH)4) and n-dodecyltrimethoxysilane under alkaline condition was presented. The functionalized Zr(OH)4 NPs with long-chain alkyl groups (–(CH2)11CH3) offered both hierarchical roughness and lower surface energy for S-fabric. The functional groups, surface morphology, element distribution, and surface roughness changes were examined by FTIR, SEM, EDS, and 3D optical profiler, respectively. And the results indicated that the cotton fabric was successfully modified. The obtained cotton fabric retained chemical stability after 72 h immersion in different extreme conditions, and mechanical durability after 200 cm of abrasion length. The S-fabric could be applied in the separation of oil–water mixture (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-dodecane, cyclohexane and kerosene) with the high efficiency (> 96%), and the efficiency remained stable after 50 separation cycles (n-dodecane and n-hexane). The facile preparation, chemical and mechanical stability, high separation efficiency, and good reusability of S-fabric indicated the potential practical application value in oil/water separation.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Non-fluorinated coatings have recently emerged as a new approach to avoid contamination on transparent surfaces. This research work concerns the synthesis of highly transparent, hydrophobic, durable, and self-cleaning coatings as an alternative to fluorine-based coatings used on glass. The developed coating is produced by a chemical route (sol–gel method) using two silica-based precursors, hexamethyldisilazane, and tetraethoxysilane (HMDS/TEOS). Then, the prepared Gel HMDS/TEOS was deposited on glass slides by the dip-coating technique. Afterward, the effects of mechanical durability, water-drop testing, thermal cycling testing, and aging times on the hydrophobicity of the gel were analyzed. The properties of the coating were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–VIS-NIR spectrophotometry, and contact angle measurement. The results show that the organic modification of the gel by trimethylsilyl (–Si–(CH3)3) groups leads to a homogeneous and a hydrophobic surface. Sufficient dilution of this gel with ethanol has been found to provide a highly transparent coating without losing its hydrophobic property. In addition, the robust and durable coating exhibits high self-cleaning performance suitable for various industrial applications.
