However, the development of new hydrophobic coatings holds the promise of extending the usable life of structures in marine environments. In this work, we quantify the barrier properties and corrosion resistance of two novel highly hydrophobic polysiloxane formulations and the legacy silicone alkyd topcoat used on the topside of Navy’s ships, all with haze gray pigmentation. Based on FTIR-ATR and EIS measurements of the pristine coatings, both the single- (1K) and the two-component (2K) polysiloxane provide significantly improved barrier characteristics (lower water diffusion coefficient and capacitance) than the silicone alkyd. These results were confirmed through a 3-month-long immersion corrosion test, which also showed that the 1K and 2K polysiloxane coatings had comparable degradation characteristic and remained highly hydrophobic. In 2019, around 310 000 metric tons of clearcoat were consumed worldwide for this purpose. 40% were two-component (2K) polyurethane (PU) coatings, 390% one-component (1K) TSA coatings (thermosetting acrylics). The remainder was divided among 1K technologies of various chemistry, namely acid-epoxy, carbamate and PU-modified TSA systems. Note de contenu : - The tests

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The particle size and shape are of momentous significance for the mechanical properties of plastic composites. However, natural fillers, like wood, are not consistent in these attributes. In order to investigate the shared traits between these characteristics, WPCs were produced using polypropylene, hardwood and softwood fillers with different particle sizes and a coupling agent. Afterwards, specimens were processed using an injection molding machine. The filler sizes and shapes were measured using dynamic image analysis. Furthermore, a shortening of coarser particles was detected. Mechanical tests were carried out to gain information about the tensile, flexural and Charpy impact properties. Neither very coarse nor very fine particles showed the best results. Instead, medium-sized particles proved to be the best option. The evaluation of the particle geometry verified a definite correlation between the shape and the mechanical properties, especially regarding the convexity, which can be a useful indicator of the quality of fiber-matrix interaction. The fiber orientation in the matrix was visualized with images taken by X-ray micro tomography. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Processing - Characterization

StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coated wood surfaces of components constituting flooring and furniture for interior end uses that exhibit good tribological properties are highly desirable. Surfaces of yellow birch wood (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) were protected with six different types of multilayer coatings (MCs) developed in this study. Each MC consisted of three layers: primer, sealer, and topcoat. UV-curable primer and topcoat formulations were, respectively, reinforced with a hydrophobic fumed silica (NS: 0 and 0.5 wt% in the formulation) and nanoclay (NC: 0, 1, and 3 wt% in the formulation). The scratch resistance of MCs on wood surfaces conditioned at 40% and 80% relative humidity (RH) was quantitatively and qualitatively studied. Quantitative evaluation was performed according to a standardized scratch test, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was used for qualitative evaluation. Statistical results have shown that NS, NC, and NS × NC do not have a significant effect on scratch resistance of coated wood surfaces, whereas the effect of RH is significant. Regardless of RH, SEM images reveal that: (i) there is no sign of lack of adhesion between coating layers and the MCs/wood surfaces interface and (ii) all the MCs seem to have a ductile/brittle response to scratching. Qualitative information was in accordance with quantitative results.
