RhéométrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Nanocomposites based on high density polyethylene (HDPE)/linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) blend were prepared by melt compounding in a twin-screw extruder using an organoclay (montmorillonite) as nano-filler and maleic anhydride-grafted linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MA) as compatibilizer. The effects of two blending protocols were also investigated. In the first blending protocol LLDPE and LLDPE-g-MA were first reinforced with organoclay and then this nanocomposite was later blended with HDPE, and the second blending protocol LLDPE-g-MA was mixed with organoclay first and then this masterbatch was diluted with HDPE and LLDPE. The preparation of the masterbatch resulted in the degradation of polyethylene, with crosslinking formation which increase the viscosity of the polymer and facilitated the dispersion of the organoclay in the polymeric matrix. WAXD and TEM were used to determine the effect of blending protocol and organoclay content on the intercalation and mechanical properties. The introduction of a maleated polyethylene was required to improve the organoclay dispersion in the nanocomposites. Thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were affected by blending protocols and the content of organoclay. The degree of crystallinity of the materials prepared using the first blending protocol decreased upon the intercalation of clay platelets whereas for the materials obtained using the second blending protocol the degree of crystallinity decreased due the crosslinking which further restricted mobility and diffusion of polymer chains. The nanocomposites show higher values of tensile modulus, flexural modulus and HDT compared to the blend without the addition of organoclay. The OMMT content added to the polymer blend results in significant and well correlated improvements in tensile and flexural moduli. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The influence of processing parameters on injection-molded bottle caps consisting of 20 wt% of cellulose fibers and an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer was studied. The study included three cylinder barrel temperatures and three mold temperatures. For each combination of temperatures, the holding pressure time was varied and the mold sealing time was determined. High density polyethylene caps were also produced as reference material, and injection-molded tensile test bars were also produced in order to assess the tensile mechanical properties. The results showed no major differences in sealing time for the caps containing cellulose fibers, except for the highest melt and mold temperatures where a slightly longer time was observed. The viscosity of the composite material was higher than that of the polymeric matrix. For the highest temperature and high shear rates, the viscosity of the composite material was close to the viscosity of the matrix material. The moisture content of the injection-molded bars was less than 1 %, showing that almost no water was absorbed during the compounding or after several months. The crystallinity decreased when the fibers were included but was not influenced by the mold temperature. Enhanced mechanical properties were obtained by using the fibers compared to the pure ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer, both in the tensile test bars and in the caps. The reference high density polyethylene had, however, a higher mechanical performance than the composite. Vis d'extrusion simpleIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Physical and mathematical model for polymer plasticizing in proposed electromagnetic dynamic spherical screw extruder were developed to explore polymer plasticizing and molding mechanism at lower temperature under vibration force field. Polymer plasticizing mechanism was studied by deriving the mathematical expressions of energy consumed and the polymer flow. The energy consumed in polymer plasticizing was depicted in terms of vibrating dissipation, polymer deformation, shear and friction energy. LDPE was used as an objective material and extruded by the extruder with the electromagnetic excitation and spherical screw. The experimental results show the good agreement with theoretical calculations. Both of them show that: Polymer processing temperature and energy consumption decrease significantly while the plasticizing rate is increased over 60% by introducing the vibration force field. The research offers experimental and theoretical references as well as the evaluation method for optimizing the polymer processing parameters and designing the vibration induced equipment.
