The shipping industry utilizes fouling control coatings (FCC) to prevent biofouling from occurring on the ship hull. The evaluation standards for the performance of FCC are based on manual inspections, which unavoidably induce some degree of subjectivity. A standardized biofouling recognition model using image analysis would provide a more objective basis for the evaluation of FCC. For this purpose, several coated panels were immersed in the ocean at CoaST Maritime Test Centre for an exposure period of six weeks, whereafter, the panels were fully covered with biofouling. The program ilastik was then successfully used to train a pixel classification model, which could provide a simple segmentation of the different biofouling categories detected on a coated surface. From the simple segmentation, a coverage percentage of biofouling was determined. The percentages can stand alone to provide information on the degree of biofouling or be used in combination with the guidelines from the European Chemicals Agency to calculate a fouling resistance rating (FRR). The FRR obtained from the model was compared with FRR values obtained from the manual evaluation of the panels.

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Adobe-type (hardened) manure attached to bovine hair is a major source of meat contamination, hide quality deterioration, and devalued leather products. Therefore, it is important to develop cleaning solutions that can rapidly remove adobe-type manure to improve the quality of hides delivered to tanners for leather processing. Oxidative chemicals such as sodium percarbonate (SPC) have been used as an environmentally friendly alternative to dehair bovine hides in 1-4 hours. In this study, we do not aim to dehair the hide with SPC, but to weaken and shorten the hair enough to remove the adobe-type manure from the hide in under 30 minutes. Our formula substantially removed adobe-type manure in less than 30 minutes using a combination of SPC and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a soaking solution in a tumbling drum. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the oxidation of cystine disulfide bridges in keratin, the structural protein of hair, indicating that our formula weakened the hair after treatment. A decrease in hair diameter, or hair shortening, was also observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis after treatment of the hides with our formula. Our environmentally friendly formula for oxidatively removing adobe-type manure is a viable option to enhance both meat and hide quality.

Salissures biologiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biofouling leads to unfavorable problems in underwater structures like ships’ hulls, aquaculture cages, fishnets, petroleum pipelines, sensors, and other equipment. The main target of antifouling applications is to prevent the early steps of fouling, namely microfouling (bacterial biofilm). In recent years, investigations into the development of environmentally friendly, nontoxic products in antifouling coating technology are becoming more widespread. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the antibiofilm activity of commercial hydrolytic enzymes (α-amylase, xylanase, glucanase, protease, pectinase, lipase, viscozyme, and lysing complex) against marine biofilm bacteria (Pseudoalteromonas agarivorans FJ040188, Vibrio lentus FJ200649, and Exiguobacterium homiense FJ200653). The experimental method involved a prevention and detachment test based on bacterial adhesion in a microplate and biomass quantification of the total biofilm using DAPI fluorescent dye after a 24-hour incubation period. Results from the screening of the biofilm percentage reduction in the enzymes, a lysing complex enzyme, were seen to be the most effective in both the prevention of bacterial adhesion and the detachment of adhered bacteria. Epifluorescence microscopy analysis of DAPI-stained adhered bacteria using lysing complex confirmed these results. It was seen that the mixtures of enzymes selected for present study have the potential to be employed as environmentally friendly antifouling additives in marine antifouling coatings. Biocides protect façades against algal and fungal attack.
A one-year field trial with a modern, highly hydrophobic plaster system in combination with innovative biocides resulted in a biocide substance release significantly lower than previously thought.
In particular, encapsulated biocides are released to a significantly smaller extent than their free analogues.Note de contenu : - Biocides in field tests
