Tannage Résumé : The environmental conditions in Egypt are very different from the conditions required by international standards for storage rooms, display cases etc. These conditions make vegetable-tanned leather artifacts dry, brittle, stiff and weak. Leather artifacts need conservation treatment with lubrication materials from time to time. Although lubrication of leather may in fact be the most viable way of protecting leather in Egyptian collections, such dressings have been avoided, because the use of oils would promote mould growth. This study aims at adding fungicide to wax or oil formulations to control fungal growth and to improve the properties of leather.
Vegetable-tanned leather was treated with oil or wax formulations without and with fungicides. Untreated and treated samples were innoculated with 4 fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum, Alternaria alternata and Trichoderma viride) which are commonly found in archaeological vegetable-tanned leather artifacts. The samples were assessed visually and by mechanical tests (tensile strength and elongation) plus an investigation of the surface morphology by SEM.
The results showed that vegetable-tanned leather samples treated with lubricants containing fungicides were more resistant to mould infection than the blank samples. However, samples treated with lubricants without fungicide were more resistant than the control sample that had not been treated at all. It can be caused by the natural fat present in the leather or by fatty compounds that have been incorporated into the leather during the oiling process. So it is better to use special synthetic oil that has a minimal tendency to form fatty spew or to use ails of a high iodine value. This means that there would be less chance of spew in the case of application of fat liquor, and one should also try to tackle the problems before processing wet-blue by using a strong emulsifying agent to avoid spew formation due to natural fat. On the other hand, it will also be beneficial because a variety of problems are caused by insufficient removal of natural grease such as bad odeur, poor preservation and a lack of inner softness. High amounts of natural fat due to poor degreasing or the presence of fat liquors with high amount of naturel oils (unsaturated fats) have a negative affect and can form significant levels of chromium VI. synthetic fats are favourable. All major leather producers have depended on wax as a protective agent, but also as a useful auxiliary. Whether the source of the wax was from animal waxes - such as beeswax, sperm whale fat or from a plant like Carnauba wax, to the modern synthetic waxes, refined out of petroleum products (or synthesised) - they remain vital to leather finishing.
A very natural finish can be applied to the leather, which is just a combination of wax (and oil), which will feed, protect, or provide touch and feel. The wax and oils are lipids, fatty substances and the behaviour of these lipids depends on the structure of the chemical used.Note de contenu : - Lipids and wax esters

Moisturisation is one of the main objectives in skin care cosmetics. Moisturising properties are generally brought by glycols, mainly glycerin, and emollients such as mineral oil which are used to decrease the transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Whereas it is acceptable in temperate conditions, these solutions lead to overloaded skin and discomfort in tropical conditions.
Functionalised waxes, prepared through transesterification and polyglycerolysis of specific wax blends are efficient moisturisers and usable in a wide variety of usage conditions.
