les polyoléfines thermoplastiques semi-cristallines : polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP), polyméthylpentène (PMP), polybutène-1 (PB-1) ;

UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The degradation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been investigated using ultrasonic (US) as well as microwave (MW) irradiation techniques with the approach of process intensification based on different additives, such as Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and air. The effects of sonication time, initial polymer concentration, and temperature on the extent of reduction in viscosity have been thoroughly investigated using US as well as MW irradiation approaches. Basically, the degradation process has been optimized by utilizing two different ultrasonic reactors in a combined approach of ultrasonic horn and bath. The maximum extent of degradation of PVA was found to be 69.33% using MW irradiation with a required energy of 0.321 g/JL, and 62.47% using US horn with a required energy of 0.054 g/JL when operated at 0.1 g/L of TiO2 catalyst. The combination of US horn and US bath results in same degradation as 0.1 g/L of TiO2 catalyst with US horn. It has also been observed that the maximum degradation of PVA was obtained with a minimum treatment time of 3 min using MW irradiation, whereas the US horn required 40 min. Moreover, a lower extent of PVA degradation was obtained when additives were used, such as surfactants (SLS) and air. As a result, it can be inferred that the MW-assisted approach in the presence of process-intensifying additives/catalysts is the best approach for the degradation of PVA with a minimum energy consumption. ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : To study the influence of expansion temperature on the properties of expanded graphite (EBG), EBG300, EBG600, and EBG900 were prepared by heating expandable graphite (EG) at 300, 600, and 900 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the influence of these EBGs on the combustion performance and physical-mechanical properties of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) were investigated. The expansion volumes of EBG300, EBG600, and EBG900 increase with the rise of temperature, and a four-stage ordered structure of “graphite worm” gradually forms. The thermal stability increases gradually for EBG300, EBG600, and EBG900. On the contrary, the thermal conductivity decreases in sequence. However, the incorporation of EBG900 promotes the formation of a continuous network structure and makes the modified LLDPE to present the best heat transmission. The addition of 30 wt% of these EBGs significantly improves LLDPE’s flame retardancy and high-temperature thermal stability. The total heat release, the peak value of heat release rate, and the fire growth index of 70LLDPE/30EBG300 reduce by 69, 91, and 87% respectively, while the effective fire performance index improves seven times. The addition of these additives reduces the tensile strength and elongation at break, the larger the EBG size, the more obvious the effect. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) was introduced in polyphenylene ether (PPE) blend to improve the processability of PPE and to secure the flame retardancy of the blend without deteriorating physical properties. Through the study of the binary blend of PPE/PPS, it was found that the shear thinning behavior and the external lubrication effect of PPS can improve the processability of PPE. Thermal analysis of the blend showed that the glass transition temperature of the PPS component decreases by the plasticization while that of the PPE component increases by the anti-plasticization effect. The modulus of the binary blend increased with the PPS content, and the tensile strength decreased but followed the additive rule. The change in tensile properties can be explained by the synergy effect of partial miscibility between PPE and PPS due to structural similarity, and non-isotropic morphology formation. Impact strength increased sharply in PPE60 due to the mechanical grafting effect by co-continuous phase formation. In the ternary blend with SEBS-MAH applied to PPE60, the impact strength steep increased at a content of 10 wt% or more due to the dramatic morphology change based on the compatibilization effect. Flame retardancy of V0 was also observed in all compositions where SEBS-MAH was applied within 20 phr.
