RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Associatively acting thickeners are standard in the formulation of modern aqueous systems, such as paints and coatings, adhesives, etc. These are either the hydrophobic-modified acrylic thickeners, often called HASE, or the NiSAT group of products. The term NiSAT, which is often used for this class of associative thickeners, refers to 'NonIonic Synthetic Associative Thickeners'.
The HASE product group comprises ionic (mainly anionic) thickeners, which require proper pH adjustment for activation. This product group utilises two mechanisms : water thickening and associative.
The NiSAT product group, as mentioned, are already nonionic and in principle can be used over the widest range of pH values. These products represent an advanced product technology and are designed to give superior rheological characteristics so that many formulation requirements can be met. Depending on the product chosen, good levelling, spatter resistance, film build and flow characteristics can be achieved. The appearance of classic syneresis can even be minimised. Furthermore, NiSAT products do not need special activation, so the majority of them can be added to the letdown or even at the end of processing. This product class does not adversely affect the corrosion or water sensitivity of the resulting system, and other secondary parameters, such as gloss, will not be negatively influenced.Note de contenu : - Chemistry

Revêtements en phase aqueuse -- Additifs:Peinture en phase aqueuse -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water borne formulations frequently need special components added to make the viscosity up to a range the user needs for application. There are four types of water soluble polymers used in this application. These four types are discussed with respect to their operating mechanism, their strengths and their weaknesses. Compatibility with other components of the water borne formulation is of premier importance, and understanding the interactions is based on polymer and colloid science. Revêtements en phase aqueuse -- Additifs:Peinture en phase aqueuse -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Let's now go to the next additive called Thickeners. This is also an important additive which plays a vital role in bringing a uniform consistency of Water based Paints. Thickeners have mainly two functions, they increase the viscosity thereby, reducing the Pigment mobility to prevent settling and they change the flow and levelling characteristics. The most commonly used thickeners are derivatives of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose and Hydroxy Methyl Cellulose. However they suffer from certain disadvantages viz: poor flow and levelling, sensitive towards enzyme degradation. Thickening agents at moderate shear increase the viscosity and increase the coatings resistance to flow du ring stirring, mixing and pouring. Rheology modifiers are necessary additives to prevent sagging and spatter during application. They also help to retain supply viscosity, provide anti-sag control, water retention/open time, spatter and scrub resistance. Note de contenu : - Structure of hydroxy ethyl cellulose (HEC)

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Formulating paints and coatings to provide the right balance of properties is a complex undertaking. Getting the rheology profile correct is just one important task on the formulator’s to-do list, but it is crucial to the ultimate success of the coating.
The rheology profile influences properties of the coating throughout its lifetime, from manufacture, storage, mixing, and application, to the resulting film properties. To control and optimize the rheology of liquid coatings, the formulator typically relies on additives, often referred to as rheology modifiers, thickeners, and thixotropes.
This article reviews some of the basics of rheology and rheological additives and includes comments from a roundtable discussion with industry experts on existing challenges and new developments.Note de contenu : - Basics of rheology

Special attention was paid to the order of addition of poly(acrylic acid) and ethyl(hydroxyethyl) cellulose, because this has an effect on the adsorption of the polymers onto the TiO2 pigment. The order of addition also affects the rheological properties of the mill base dispersion and the gloss of the paint. The gloss was also affected by the surfactant used to stabilize the latex. Higher gloss was obtained using a nonionic surfactant than with an anionic surfactant Note de contenu : - PAINT INGREDIENTS-ADSORBENTS AND ADSORBATES
