The substrate surface was first coated by thin polyaniline film, then silver particles were deposited on the surface in order to improve the electrical conductivity. Three different acids (perchloric, nitric, and sulfuric acid) were used to synthesize the primary polyaniline film. The method adopted in the present study was not based on incorporation of silver particles within the polyaniline matrix; rather, the silver was deposited on the substrate surface. The electrical conductivity of the samples was increased to a level high enough for direct electroplating of nickel. The sample synthesized using nitric acid showed the finest grain size (1.57 µm) and greatest thickness of the final nickel coating (57 µm). The sample synthesized using sulfuric acid exhibited the lowest electrical resistance (0.008 Ω). In addition, the nickel coating deposited on the surface of the sample synthesized using perchloric acid exhibited the strongest adhesion to the substrate (5B according to ASTM standard).

Tannage Résumé : In this study, the dry heat resistances of the leathers tanned with different agents such as vegetable, glutaraldehyde, zirconium, phosphonium and chromium were investigated. The morphological characterisation of the tanned leathers was performed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) based on the grain surface and cross section of the leather samples. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to analyse the molecular structure of the tanned leathers. The results showed that the tanned leathers have different dry heat resistances measured at 150°C and 200°C for 30 minutes which are not in parallel with their hydrothermal stability values. The study presented has established that because of the covalent bonding with collagen, usage of chromium is an effective tanning system in achieving the highest dry heat resistance. Because of good filling properties the dry heat resistance values for vegetable and zirconium-tanned leathers were found to be better among the other tanning processes. Note de contenu : - Materials

A series of experiments has demonstrated an excellent drying activity toward solvent-borne alkyd resins of different oil length at considerably lower metal concentration than optimal for commercial cobalt(II) 2-ethylhexanoate. The behavior in real paint was simulated on formulations bearing inhibitor of autooxidation. The detailed studies of the drying process have shown that the relatively slow initial step of autooxidation reaction, when compared with cobalt compounds, is compensated for by the absence of the induction times. Furthermore, the active oxovanadium(IV) species are not consumed during the drying processes as evidenced by EPR spectroscopic measurements. Durable ultraviolet (UV)-protective cotton fabric has great application potential in outdoor cotton clothing. In this study, oppositely charged TiO2 nanoparticles were deposited onto cotton fabric through the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, resulting in multilayer films with UV-protective properties. The mechanism of the technology has been investigated through characterization of the structure and properties using different techniques including FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and a scanning electron microscope with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum. The results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles distributed uniformly on the surface of cotton fibers. The TGA results indicated that the TiO2 nanoparticles deposit on cotton fabrics had little effect on the thermal stability of cotton fabrics. The tensile strength and air permeability of the cotton samples were tested by a universal material testing machine and automatic ventilation instrument. The UV protection property of cotton fabric after assembled multilayer films was measured by an ultraviolet transmittance analyzer, and the laundering experiments were carried out to determine the durability of TiO2 nanoparticles on cotton fabric. The results showed that the UV protection property of cotton fabrics after assembled TiO2 nanoparticles was still maintained at a high level after five launderings.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Preparation of TiO2 nanoparticle suspension - Pretreatment of cotton fabrics - Multilayer assembly on cotton fabrics - Measurements and characterization

Tests de toxicitéIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Flavonoid constituents from the aqueous extract of the leaves of Eupatorium odoratum, an invasive weed in Thailand, have potential use as dyestuffs for cotton dyeing. It was found that cotton yarn, which was pretreated with a chitosan solution (with and without a crosslinking glyoxal solution), followed by dyeing with E. odoratum extract in the presence of the inorganic mordant, alum, provided better depth of shade (K/S) and also gave better fastness to light and washing than the untreated cotton yarn. Pretreated cotton yarn with the biomordant solution from Memecylon scutellatum leaves gave relatively poor light and wash fastness of the resultant dyed cotton in the presence of alum. From the toxicity studies, the aqueous extract of the leaves of E. odoratum before and after dyeing showed a high toxicity level to the earthworm (Diplocardia communis) and the guppy fish (Poecilia reticulate). Therefore, it is strongly suggested that E. odoratum aqueous extract after dyeing should be significantly diluted before discharged into the environment.
