Simulation of low density polyethylene (LDPE) pyrolysis and optimisation of pyro-oil yield / Adewale George Adeniyi in INTERNATIONAL POLYMER PROCESSING, Vol. XXXV, N° 2 (05/2020)
[article]
Titre : Simulation of low density polyethylene (LDPE) pyrolysis and optimisation of pyro-oil yield Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Adewale George Adeniyi, Auteur ; Joshua O. Ighalo, Auteur Année de publication : 2020 Article en page(s) : p. 229-237 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Plastic pyrolysis has been studied over the years and has been proven to be a viable method of converting waste materials into useful products. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is of particular interest as it makes up a significant part of solid waste stream. Aspen HYSYS was used to model the steady-state pyrolysis of waste low-density polyethylene (LDPE) based on a combination of kinetic and thermodynamic approaches. The results of the numerical optimisation (at a basis of 10 kg/h feed) showed that 100% conversion and a maximum of 91.6% oil yield can be achieved at a temperature of 449 °C and a purge gas flowrate of 1.21 kg/h. Reaction temperature was found to be a more important process factor than purge gas flowrate. Correlations were also developed for the prediction of oil yield and reaction conversion based on the process temperature and purge gas flowrate. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the correlations for both reaction conversion and oil yield were statistically significant. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The degree of film-width reduction or necking during film-casting is analyzed for three metallocene-catalyzed linear low density polyethylenes, LLDPE, with varying degrees of sparse long-chain branching, LCB. The resins included three sparsely LCB polyethylene, PE, materials with varying LCB content ranging from linear to 0.57 LCB/10000 CH2 along with a Ziegler-Natta polymerized LLDPE and a tubular free-radical polymerized low density polyethylene, LDPE. The last two resins are used as reference materials. The primary objective of this analysis is to evaluate whether uniaxial extensional rheological characteristics, in particular strain-hardening, that are a result of LCB influence the film-necking properties. At the lowest drawdown ratio, necking is observed to be reduced with increasing LCB, and thus strain-hardening characteristics. At the higher drawdown ratios it is observed that LCB no longer reduces necking and the curves merge to the results found for linear PE, except in the case of LDPE, which shows reduced necking at all drawdown ratios. Furthermore, comparisons of film necking are also made to separate the effects of molecular weight distribution, MWD, and LCB. The results indicate that both broadening the MWD and the addition of sparse LCB reduce the degree of necking, but to a lesser degree in the case of broadening the MWD. Analysis of the uniaxial extensional and dynamic shear rheology with the pom-pom constitutive model reveals that a distribution of branches along shorter relaxation time modes is important in reducing necking at higher drawdown ratios. Factors such as shear viscosity effects, extrudate swell, and non-isothermal behavior were eliminated as contributing factors. TransportIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The helical grooved barrel feed section permits, when the barrel channel aspect ratio and the barrel channel helical angle are properly designed, an operating mode where the positive conveying is prevailing. While the pellet size of materials is varied, different dimension relationships of the barrel channel depth and pellet size could induce different equivalent barrel channel aspect ratios with the transformation of solids conveying mechanisms from the positive conveying to the frictiondrag conveying. Considering the effect of dimension relationships on the solids conveying mechanism, a novel pelletsize physical model was established to guide the available design of the barrel channel geometry for positive conveying. In the pellet-size model, one or two shear interfaces were identified inside the solid-plug resulting in different equivalent barrel channel aspect ratios, based on which the solids conveying mechanism on the shear interfaces was detailed by the boundary condition equations for positive conveying. Besides, the theoretical simulations are also compared with the on-line measuring experimental data. The results show that the equivalent barrel channel aspect ratio on the shear interfaces exists indeed and determines the solids conveying mechanism, which is well confirmed by the excellent consistence between the predicted and measured data. Thermoplastiques -- Moulage par injectionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Injection molding with expandable thermoplastic microspheres (ETM) containing blowing chemicals is capable of fabricating lightweight, dimensionally stable plastic parts while using less material. This paper presents the study of microcellular injection molding of low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) parts with various ETM contents. It was found that the molded parts exhibit relatively better surface quality than conventional foamed parts. The microcellular morphology and cell density of the fractured crosssectional surfaces were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As reflected by the testing results, the cell microstructure – such as cell size, cell density, and a layered structure with a foamed core sandwiched by skin layers – play an important role in the weight reduction, surface quality, and mechanical properties. A smaller cell diameter and a thicker skin layer help to improve the surface quality and tensile properties of the injection molded parts with ETM. Finally, an appropriate ETM content has a positive effect on cell microstructure and weight reduction, whereas too high a concentration of microspheres adversely affects the tensile properties and surface quality.
