Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study illustrates the capabilities of a nanoindentation/nanoscratch tester to assess mechanical and tribological properties of coating films. Properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, mar and scratch resistance, and critical force for cracking can be accurately measured. Operation of the Nano-Indenter is described in detail. A scanning probe microscope (SPM) is shown to be a valuable supplement to the Nano-Indenter. Well-characterized thermoset acrylic clearcoats and thermoplastic latex films were studied. For the first time, operating parameters are described for measurement of relatively soft coatings, such as films cast from a latex with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 8°C. Thus, the method is made available for study of most types of coatings. The method can easily discriminate between coatings with different Tgs and crosslink densities. Once operating parameters are established, it takes about 10 minutes for an indentation test and 10 minutes for a scratch test with the Nano-Indenter, and with further automation this time could be reduced. Each indtntation test accurately measures hardness and elastic modulus as a function of depth within the coating, and each scratch test provides additional insight into the material's behavior. The method is sensitive to small changes in polymer composition and formulation, and results are highly reproducible.

However, the amine type hardeners often employed can easily react with atmospheric carbon dioxide and moisture to form carbamate salts. These carbamate salts accumulate on the surface and cause blush and intercoat adhesion issues. Adducts based on methylcyclohexyl diamine (MCDA, Baxxodur EC 210), a cycloaliphatic diamine curative for epoxy resin systems, displayed enhanced carbamate stability when compared to adducts based on both isophorone diamine (IPDA) and m-xylylene diamine (MXDA). This behaviour was further validated in coating tests, where coating formulations based on MCDA exhibited superior gloss. The cure behaviour, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of MCDA, IPDA, and MXDA cured systems were also assessed using various analytical techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry and rheology. Overall, MCDA was proven to be an attractive building block for epoxy diamine industrial coating systems. Many minerals can contribute to the performance of powder coatings, but which ones result in the best outcome ? The most commonly used minerais for powder coatings are calcium carbonate (natural and precipitated CaCO3) and barium sulphate (naturel barite and synthetic grades known as Blanc Fixe). Imerys produces and supplies a whole range of inorganic minerais which differ in terms of morphology, size, oil absorption, brightness, hardness and density. A selection of these minerais has been made for the evaluation in powder coatings to verify their suitability in these coatings and potential enhancement of the performances.
