In this article, a new class of hydrophobic reactive dyes that can react with polypropylene were designed using diazirine moiety as a reactive group, azo structure as a chromophore, and an ester group as a linking bridge. The difference among these dyes was the alkyl chain length on the azo chromophore, which was used to fine-tune the affinity between the dyes and fibre. The structures of the synthesised dyes and intermediates were characterised and confirmed using nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and infrared spectrometry. The absorption and thermal properties of the dyes were also studied to ensure their feasibility for dyeing application. In addition, the diazirine dyes were successfully applied to dye polypropylene fabrics using a two-step process by dyeing in a non-aqueous solvent and fixing it under heating. The dyes and polypropylene fibre were demonstrated to react, where the fixation values were in the range 64.5–76.4%. The systematic study of the structure–property relationship demonstrated the positive effect of the alkyl chain in promoting colour yield, however, accompanied by a slightly reduced fixation value. Due to the chemical bonding of the dye molecules to the fibre, the dyed polypropylene fabrics exhibited excellent colour fastness property, making the dyeing technology very promising for future industrial applications. To increase early rain resistance and decrease water sensitivity, different formulation techniques were investigated. Raw materials were evaluated in a standard starting point formula to generate an optimal formulation that reduces water sensitivity and surfactant leaching, while simultaneously increasing early rain resistance. Results for early rain resistance were determined by developing new testing methodology that varied environmental factors during the film curing process. We determined that using functional additives as well as increasing the hydrophobicity of the coating film can substantially increase early rain resistance.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Note de contenu : - RHEOLOGY : Types of flow - Newtonian flow - Non-newtonian flow - Shear thinning - Shear thickening

The COVID-19 pandemic has also been a primary force behind the increased demand for and production of antimicrobial coatings. Typically, antimicrobial coatings are used to resist and decolonize microbial attacks such as biofilm formation, fungal contamination, and black mold formation. In this study, we synthesized a water-based antimicrobial polymer nanocomposite, I-P(MMA/BA), by blending an iodine complex with a poly (methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) latex with the aid of polyol and polyvinylpyrrolidone. Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated in two habitats, namely planktonic and biofilm. Biomass studies indicated that iodinated latex nanocomposites and films show excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. About 85–97% of biofilm formation was reduced by covering 15–30% of the area with iodinated latex film. The contact angle measurement of the iodinated latex-coated surface provides evidence of good hydrophobicity, which prevents stagnation of water over the surface. The developed dual-functional water-based iodinated nanocomposite displays great potential for inhibiting biofilm formation on surfaces when employed as a binder in paints. The surface-modified HNTs (m-HNTs) were added to the epoxy coating, and the corrosion protection performance was evaluated in terms of the mixing ratio. The m-HNTs were characterized by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission transmission electron spectroscopy. The addition of m-HNTs to the epoxy coating led to an improvement in its barrier and adhesion properties. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted to evaluate the corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating with different mixing ratios. Corrosion protection performance was successfully improved by an increase in m-HNTs. The results were in accordance with those of the barrier and adhesion properties.
