Tannage Résumé : Tanning with silicic acid, a kind of silicon-containing materials, is considered as a more environmentally benign process; however, the obtained leather would become stiff and brittle during storage in spite of possessing acceptable shrinkage temperature (Ts). Herein, we incorporated organosilicon material attaching silicon atoms with T linkage structure (e.g. glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, GPTMS) in the leather-making process to investigate hydrothermal stability and porous structure, in particular their variation along with different storage time, through Ts determination, DSC analysis, SEM observation and SEM-EDS test. The results confirmed that the introduction of GPTMS stabilized properties of the resultant leather during accelerated ageing process, which may be ascribed to that GPTMS could prevent silicon hydroxyl groups existing in collagen fiber matrix from further condensation. Besides, the tanning mechanism of chrome-free tanning agent based on silicon materials such as silicic acid and GPTMS was investigated preliminarily by means of FT-IR and XPS analysis, indicating hydrogen bonds between silicon hydroxyl groups and amino groups in collagen molecules, and the covalent bonding formed by epoxy group of GPTMS and carboxyl groups of collagen fibers are beneficial to improvement of the properties of silicon-based materials tanned leather. These findings provide an effective and promising strategy to control condensation of silicon hydroxyl groups, and are of great significance to the development of a chrome-free tanning technology based on silicon materials. Although no changes in appearance were seen in the PEEK specimens after 60 cycles, extending the cycles to 90 caused the delamination of the coating film from the Zn.Ph. The major reason for this delamination was the degradation of the PEEK polymer caused by its hydrothermal-catalyzed esterification. In the PPS-coating systems, chemical reactions at the interfaces between the PPS and Zn and Fe in the Zn.Ph layer during cycling led to the formation of ZnS and FeS reaction products, which enhanced the Zn.Ph-to-PPS adhesive bond; correspondingly, there were no signs of peeling and separation of the coating after 90 cycles. In addition, because these intermediate reaction products are insoluble at high pH, they minimized the rate of delamination of the PPS coating caused by the cathodic reaction, H2O + 1/2 O2 + 2e- ' 2OH-, at the corrosion side of a defect in the film. In contrast, PEEK coatings containing non-reactive Zn.Ph underwent cathodic delamination, because of the susceptibility of Zn.Ph to alkali dissolution. Thus, we believe that combined layers of PPS and Zn.Ph provide great protection to steels in a harsh environment with temperatures up to 200°C.
Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, the addition of silane treated TiO2 nanoparticles on the self-cleaning properties of an acrylic facade coating was evaluated. Tetraethoxyorthosilicate, TEOS, was used for surface treatment of TiO2 nanoparticles. The silica grafting on the TiO2 nanoparticles was characterized via Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area measurement, pore size distribution, and real density measurements. The effect of surface treatment and content of nanoparticles on the photocatalytic activity of acrylic coating and self-cleaning properties was studied. For this purpose, the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (Rh.B) dyestuff, as a colorant model, was investigated by colorimetric technique, while the coating samples were exposed to UVA irradiation. Performance of the acrylic coating films was evaluated by gloss change during accelerated weathering conditions. Also, the surface morphology of the coating films was studied using SEM analysis. The results showed that the addition of both treated and untreated TiO2 nanoparticles provides self-cleaning property to the acrylic coatings. However, silica surface treatment of TiO2 nanoparticles reduces the coating degradation caused by TiO2. This is more evident when higher concentrations of the treated TiO2 nanoparticles are used.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This research article reports on the response of various hybrid sol–gel materials when applied as coatings to pre-treated bare AA2024 substrates, to mechanical indentation and cyclic thermal stimuli, in order to determine their usefulness in aeronautical applications. Three groups of hybrid sol–gel-coated samples were prepared using various organosilanes and transition metal oxides. The characterization of the materials revealed that the presence of the organic functionalities, especially the methacrylate group, has a noticeable effect on the mechanical response of the hybrid coatings, in particular their flexibility. The presence of methacrylate group in the cured material gives it ability to flex which influenced the thermal fatigue characteristics of the coatings which are able to withstand the cyclic temperature regimes of 82 ± 3 to −37 ± 3°C over 25 2 h cycles. This capability to maintain substrate protection is reflected in the corrosion resistance of the coatings as measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and accelerated exposure testing. This result is important, as it shows that hybrid sol–gel materials can be used in applications where protecting a metal or ally substrate is paramount, especially in thermally volatile environments.
