Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Over the last 30 years, I have been asked by numerous people, including my children, what I do for a living. After trying to explain corrosion, site condition assessments, coating system selection, specification writing, inspection and training, I default to a standard answer that I'm sure many readers have used: "I watch paint dry." While it may truly seem simple to someone outside of the protective coating business, I have spent years helping engineers, architects and owners understand the complexities of coating systems and the need for proper planning, specifications and inspection. Let's explore some of the aspects that have changed over the last 30 years to the compexity tof painting. Note de contenu : - Regulations

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wettability and bonding quality of exterior coatings on fast-growing wood surfaces were studied. Samples of air-dried flat-grained (tangential surface) and edge-grained (radial surface) pattern of jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) woods were used. Before application of exterior coatings, the surfaces of the lumber samples were sanded. To provide wood surfaces with various degrees of roughness, abrasive papers of 120, 240, and 360 grits were used for the surface preparation. The wettability of two exterior coatings (water-based acrylic and oil-based alkyd varnishes) on the sanded wood surfaces was measured using a sessile drop contact angle method. The Shi and Gardner (S/G) model was used to evaluate and compare the wettability of the surface coatings on the wood. The sanded wood samples were coated with the two coatings (two layers each). Bonding quality of the coating layers was measured using a crosscut tape test method. Experimental results show that constant contact angle change rate (K value) of the S/G model decreased as the grit number of abrasive paper increased. This indicates that the wettability decreased as the roughness of the surface decreased (surface becomes smoother). There was no evidence of differences in wettability between tangential and radial wood surfaces. The oil-based alkyd coating generated better wettability compared to the water-based acrylic. The crosscut tests showed that the bonding quality of the coating films on both jabon and sengon wood decreased as the surface became smoother. The sengon wood compared to jabon wood provided better coating wettability and bonding quality. Wettability in terms of the K values was a good indication for determining the bonding quality of the two varnish layers. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fluoroalkyl end-capped vinyltrimethoxysilane oligomer [RF-(CH2CHSi(OMe)3) n -RF; RF = CF(CF3)OC3F7; n = 2, 3: RF-(VM) n -RF] can undergo the sol–gel reaction in the presence of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) (SBR) under alkaline or acidic conditions, respectively, to afford the corresponding fluorinated oligomeric silica/SBR nanocomposites [RF-(VM-SiO2) n -RF/SBR]. Wettability control between superoleophobic and superoleophilic characteristics was observed on the modified superhydrophobic glass surfaces treated with these fluorinated nanocomposites. The nanocomposites, which were prepared under alkaline conditions, can provide a superoleophobic/superhydrophobic (superamphiphobic) characteristic on the modified surface; however, a superoleophilic/superhydrophobic characteristic was observed on the modified surface treated with the fluorinated nanocomposites, which were prepared under acidic conditions. Interestingly, the fluorinated nanocomposite particle powders possessing a superoleophilic/superhydrophobic characteristic were applied to the packing material for the column chromatography to separate not only the mixture of oil and water but also the W/O emulsion to isolate the transparent colorless oil. In addition, these particle powders were found to have a good reusability as the packing materials for the separation of the mixture of oil and water. Note de contenu : - Measurements

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Modification of wood can change its hydro- ] philic character. Consequently, modified wettability of wood can change its behavior with coating or gluing processes. The authors investigated the wettability of oil-heat-treated and DMDHEU-modified Scots pine wood with some commercial waterborne coatings. The increased hydrophobic character of modified wood was revealed from high advancing contact angles of water. In contrast, exterior waterborne coatings exhibited much better wetting on modified substrates than on unmodified substrates. Good wetting of modified wood by waterborne coatings is an interesting result, opening up possibilities for application of environmentally friendly waterborne surface systems on modified wood.
