In general, all coatings showed ability to bind to the stone and tile surfaces, and polymer-based coatings expressed stronger adhesion compared to a small-molecule fluorinated phosphate coating. Also, anionic fluorinated polymers containing methacrylic acid (MAA) residues in the ammonium carboxylate form adhered more strongly compared to corresponding acidic polymer counterparts. In addition, anionic fluorinated polymers, shown to adhere more strongly to granite than marble, possibly due to strong Lewis acid-base interaction between carboxylate and aluminosilicates. Conversely, the fluorinated polymers, bearing the MAA side-chains in their free-acid form, bound more strongly to marble via possible Brønsted acid-base interactions between carboxylic acid and calcium carbonate. Lastly, in most cases, comparable fracture thresholds were observed for the same coating material on different substrates. This was expected since fracture threshold is a measure of the mechanical strength of the coating material, independent of the substrate difference.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to provide adequate fire resistance to construction materials, such as steel and wood, the use of high and low molecular weight tannins (TMw-H and TMw-L), extracted from the bark of Pinus radiata, as carbonaceous agents, was studied. The extracts were fully characterized by GPC, HPLC, and UV to determine the total amount of phenols, percentage of the monomers, and total yield. The molecular weights of both extracts varied between 2986 and 5573 Da, and they were mainly composed of catechin and taxifolin. Eco-friendly water-based formulations were obtained, without producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), by varying the extract content between 15.5 and 37.8% w/w. The coatings, varying in thickness and substrates, were evaluated for their film-forming properties, covering power, mechanical properties, such as adhesion, embossing, abrasion, and flexibility, as well as their resistance to fire. The results indicated that good mechanical properties were obtained when using coatings containing TMw-L compared with those obtained when using TMw-H. The carbonization index (28%) and the mass loss percentage (9.35%) of the coatings containing TMw-L compared well to commercial coatings, indicating that they have excellent fire-retardant properties. However, the behavior of the TMw-H containing coatings was rather intumescent. Electrodepositions of poly(N-methylpyrrole), poly(N-phenylpyrrole), and poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) were performed in nonaqueous medium on a poly(pryrrole)-coated copper surface using cyclic voltammetry. The morphologies of the resulting bilayered composite coatings of poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methylpyrrole), poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-phenylpyrrole), and poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Stabilities of a doping-dedoping process of the composites were determined from the cyclic voltammetric study of the bilayer-coated electrodes in a monomer-free solution. Corrosion performances of the bilayer composite-coated and uncoated copper electrodes were investigated in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution using open circuit potential–time (E ocp–t) curves, anodic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All the investigated bilayered coatings gave significant enhancement in the corrosion resistance of copper, compared to the single poly(pyrrole) coating. Stability and corrosion tests revealed that the composite material poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) exhibited higher electrochemical stability and corrosion resistant behavior than the other bilayered composite coatings.

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Depending on the industry, applications exist for all types of conformal coating materials. However, one family of conformal coatings can do something that no other coating can: it can conformally encapsulate with 100% protection, regardless of the size or intricacy of the assembly, device or component (even at micron and submicron thickness levels). No bridging of openings, voids or pooling; just a uniform, microscopic coating that acts as a shield against almost anything that various environments can throw at it.
