The tensile strength of PTFE extrudates is measured as a function of apparent shear rate (flow rate), reduction ratio (cross sectional area of barrel to that of die), contraction angle, and diameter of the barrel. To describe the effects of die design on the quality of the final product, a basic phenomenological mathematical model has been developed. The model consists of a simple equation that explains fibril formation, due to the compression of PTFE resins, plus a kinetic equation, which is coupled with the "radial-flow" hypothesis to predict the structure and the tensile strength of extrudates. The model predictions are found to be consistent with tensile strength measurements and SEM micrographs of the PTFE extrudates. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Methods

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/4 wt% CaCO3 composites were prepared using a Haake Rotational Rheometer. The effects of the CaCO3 particle shapes and size on the thermal and mechanical properties were investigated and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and universal testing machine. The results show the addition of CaCO3 to HDPE can increase the crystallization and decrease the melting temperature and crystallization temperature. The tensile yield strength of the composites was higher than that of HDPE. Sphere-like CaCO3 is the best form in improving the thermal stability and cubic CaCO3 can cause negative effect to the toughness. The impact strength of the composites is significantly increased with decreasing CaCO3 particle size. SEM examination of the fractured surfaces of the composites shows that CaCO3 reacted in cavitations and "lance" functions which increase the impact strength of the HDPE/CaCO3 composites. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Structures, working mechanism, data collecting and processing methods of the self-made multifunctional all-electronic rheometer for polymer composites were introduced in detail. The validity of this equipment was proved by deriving the apparent shear viscosity expression under axial vibration condition and comparing the results obtained from both this selfmade rheometer and Rosand Rh7D capillary rheometer at steady state. With this equipment, the effects of calcium carbonate weight fraction, particle size and vibration parameters on apparent shear viscosity of calcium carbonate filled propylene composites were investigated. The results show that: the apparent shear viscosity of the composites increases with the filled particle concentration. However, it is seldom affected by particle size within certain a range of shear rate. While the apparent shear viscosity increases with the decrease of particle size at moderate shear rate. Besides, the apparent shear viscosity declines rapidly with the increasing vibration amplitude. However it exhibits a cosinoidal or sinusoidal trend as vibration frequency increases and peaks at the resonant frequency of the composites.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The cure characteristics of a series of powder coatings containing titanium dioxide dispersed in an epoxy/polyester matrix are reported. The titanium dioxide pigments were produced via both the chloride and sulfate routes and coated with varying amounts of alumina and silica. Comparison data for formulations containing zinc oxide and silica are also included. The time to gelation for these powder coatings depends on a number of factors. Increasing the level of flow agent significantly reduces the time to gelation. The presence of traces of zinc inhibits cure in the case of the sulfate-based pigments. Varying levels of alumina and silica in the coating on the titanium dioxide coating also influence the time to gelation. Increasing the level of silica on the chloride-based coating increases the time to gelation, whereas in the case of the sulfate based coating the time to gelation is shortened. These differences are attributed to the effects of zinc in the coating and the effectiveness of the dicyandiamide catalysts.
