In a panel test, WorléeAqua Nail 100 was compared on women's fingernails with a standard solvent-based polish and a standard water-based nail polish. After allowing the nails to dry for one hour, a simulation of five minutes of dish washing was carried out, followed by ten rounds of rummaging in a pile of pebbles. Evaluation of the results demonstrated that the water-based nail polish base performed very well in the six categories of application, durability, drying time, smell gloss and opacity. The commercially-available water-based nail polish product received similar ratings for smell. However, it failed to compare favourably in any other category. The solvent-based polish performed less well in the categories of smell and opacity. Furthermore, determination of the pendulum hardness of nail polish made with the new aqueous acrylic polymer led to ratings similar to those of solvent-containing nail polishes. Gloss measurments like wise yielded very favourable results for the new nail polish bases. These evaluations demonstrate that use of the new nail polish bases requires no compromise in terms of durability or other characteristics, and even presents advantages in terms of smell and opacity. Accordingly, the WorléeAqua Nail series proves to be a very good alternative to solvent-based nail polish systems. Note de contenu : - New film-forming acrylic polymers for water-based nail polishes

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Mechanical abrasion followed by transmission delta-haze measurement is a standard means to assess wear in polymeric silicone automotive hard coatings. However, the drawbacks of this abrasion–transmission (A–T) technique (drift, variability, sample size, and test time) make an alternative measurement method desirable. Literature reports have shown that the ratio of hardness to modulus can successfully predict wear performance in ceramic and metallic nanocomposite coatings. This work studied measures from both nanoindentation and nanoscratch testing to determine which could be a viable alternative to the historical A–T test for a specific polymeric coating system. Both nanoindentation measures of hardness (H) and the ratio of hardness to modulus (H/Er) showed high repeatability compared with the other measures evaluated in this study and compared with the historical test. Of these two measures, the ratio H/Er with an exponential fit showed the strongest correlation with A–T delta-haze measurements. Key formulation and process factors affecting abrasion resistance in automotive coatings were analyzed in a designed experiment with historical A–T delta-haze and nanoindentation H/Er as responses. Analysis showed significant benefits to the use of the H/Er measure of abrasion resistance in modeling coating performance. Goals of this long-term program have been: comparing precoalescence and post-coalescence crosslinking; synthesizing polymer nanoparticle latexes (~ 20 to 25 nm) from a variety of acrylic monomers, including crosslinking and crosslinkable monomers; and blending nanoparticle latexes with compatible conventional (~ 120 to 130 nm) latexes and understanding their effects on film formation and on fundamental and empirical film properties. As we previously reported, blending conventional and nanolatexes in an 85/15 ratio (w/w of polymer solids) effects substantial changes of fundamental film properties. Best results included reducing minimum filming temperatures (MFT) while increasing Young’s moduli by factors of two to 17. Substantial improvements in empirical film properties such as gloss (up to 97 at 60°), hardness (increased by 2–5 pencils), block resistance, and adhesion to aluminum were also found. The previous report covered only a single blend ratio. Here we report studies of blends with ratios of conventional to nanoparticle latexes ranging from 92.5/7.5 to 30/70 (w/w). As before, the latexes and nanolatexes are BMA/BA copolymers with 0–4 wt.% of 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate (precoalescence crosslinker) and 0–5 wt.% of diacetone acrylamide (for post-coalescence crosslinking with adipic dihydrazide). Films cast from these blends are subjected to everyday empirical coatings tests and are characterized using instrumental tests including dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC). Film formation and film morphology are studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results confirm that blending nanoparticles at ratios up to 50/50 (w/w of polymer solids) can substantially improve certain properties of conventional latex films. For many properties, the optimum ratio is around 85/15 conventional/nano; a 92.5/7.5 ratio also affords substantial improvements. As coatings, the blends have near-zero VOC.

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new class of silicone has been developed for coatings or as coating additives. Cycloaliphatic silane monomers were prepared and reacted into more easily handled cyclic oligomers. These cyclic oligomers were ring-opened into siloxane polymers. The polymers were functionalized with a variety of groups, including: amino, glycidyl epoxide, cyclohexene epoxide, acrylic, and alkoxysilane. The cycloaliphatic silicones have been designed for a number of different curing conditions: (1) ambient temperature-cure (amino and glycidyl epoxide), (2) cationic ultraviolet (UV)-cure (cyclohexene epoxide), (3) radical UV-cure (acrylic), and (4) moisture-cure (alkoxysilane). The end usages thus far have been focused on silicone coatings; however, usage as coating additives will be a focus for future research. The cycloaliphatic silicone has been UV-cured with mixed sol–gel precursors for usage as aerospace coatings. The cycloaliphatic silicones have also been ambient temperature-cured for release coatings, and have application as anti-fouling coatings. The inherent low surface energy makes the cycloaliphatic silicones prime candidates for surface tension additives.
