NumérisationIndex. décimale : 670.427 Mécanisation, automatisation, robotisation des opérations Résumé : The concepts of Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis are nowadays considered by policy makers a key for the sustainability of the whole European Industry. However, in the era of Industry4.0, this results into an extremely complex scenario requiring new business models and involve the whole value chain, and representing an opportunity as well. Moreover, in order to properly consider the environmental pillar of sustainability, the quality of available information represents a challenge in taking appropriate decisions, considering inhomogeneity of data sources, asynchronous nature of data sampling in terms of clock time and frequency, and different available volumes. In this sense, Big Data techniques and tools are fundamental in order to handle, analyze and process such heterogeneity, to provide a timely and meaningful data and information interpretation for making exploitation of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence possible. Handling and fully exploiting the complexity of the current monitoring and automation systems calls for deep exploitation of advanced modelling and simulation techniques to define and develop proper Environmental Decision Support Systems. Such systems are expected to extensively support plant managers and operators in taking better, faster and more focused decisions for improving the environmental footprint of production processes, while preserving optimal product quality and smooth process operation. The paper describes a vision from the steel industry on the way in which the above concepts can be implemented in the steel sector through some application examples aimed at improving socio-economic and environmental sustainability of production cycles.

TannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The purpose of this work is to compare the environmental impact of two systems for processing bovine leather: (i) a new continuous system that consists in dehydration and tanning and post-tanning by immersion versus (ii) the traditional system using drums.
In order to better assess the environmental impact of this new tanning system, the life cycle assessment methodology has been chosen to perform calculations on various impact categories, including the global warming potential (CO2 equivalent emissions), and the energy consumption for both the traditional and the new tanning processes.
When assessing the environmental impact of the new system, it is clear that a reduction in the use of acetone during the process will positively affect the environmental outcomes. In this regard, results show reductions on the impacts in eight out of the eleven impact categories analyzed as well as reductions on energy consumption. However, the acetone loss considered (5%) led to higher impacts compared to the traditional system in three specific impact categories, which can be improved by reducing the acetone emission to 2.5%.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS : Goal and scope - Material - Dehydration process - Tanning and post-tanning by immersion of dehydrated hides - Life cycle assessment methology

Polymères superabsorbantsIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are making waves as versatile materials with the special ability to soak up massive amounts of water. This article takes an in-depth look at recent advances in these materials, examining how they are synthesized, what properties they have and how they could enhance a range of industries. From diapers that keep babies comfy to fields thirsty for irrigation. But like any powerful force, they bring challenges. The ecological footprint is analyzed and a more sustainable future is addressed, with biodegradability and recycling paving the way. The article takes us from the lab bench to the fields and beyond, showing why these tiny water absorbers can play an important role in the future. Note de contenu : - Market size and growth

Environnement -- Etudes d'impactIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanning industries have been vitally important to the economy of Bangladesh, yet they have been proven to be detrimental to the environment mainly due to the discharge of quantities of untreated wastewater containing chromium. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a practical tool used to evaluate and compare the life cycle environmental impacts of a product. Using the IMPACT 2002+ methodology within the SimaPro LCA modelling tool, we have studied and compared the environmental burden of of two leather products : full-chrome leather (FCL) and chrome-retanned crust leather (CRL). In the case of both FCL and CRL, it was found that significant environmental impacts were associated with tanning, rechroming, neutralisation, deliming-bating and the acid wash processes in the production cycle. The emissions responsible for these processes except deliming-bating, are Cr(III), Cr(VI) which plays a vital role in maximising the toxicity potential and ammonia (deliming-bating) to a minor extent. Supply chain hotspots are transport for raw hides, chemicals and electricity. FCL had 5 times, 4.53 times and 2.53 times greater impact on categories of aquatic ecotoxicity, non-carcinogens and ecosystem quality respectively compared to CRL. In addition, aquatic acidification potential of FCL was greater than that of CRL, while CRL had marginally higher contribution to aquatic eutrophication. The carbon footprint of the two systems was found to be about 0.75kg CO2 equivalent per M2 of leather. The assessment shows that the FCL production system has higher environmental impact than CRL.
