Pyrolyse

Three groups of hybrid sol–gel-coated samples were prepared using various organosilanes and transition metal oxides. The characterization of the materials revealed that the presence of the organic functionalities, especially the methacrylate group, has a noticeable effect on the mechanical response of the hybrid coatings, in particular their flexibility. The presence of methacrylate group in the cured material gives it ability to flex which influenced the thermal fatigue characteristics of the coatings which are able to withstand the cyclic temperature regimes of 82 ± 3 to −37 ± 3°C over 25 2 h cycles. This capability to maintain substrate protection is reflected in the corrosion resistance of the coatings as measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and accelerated exposure testing. This result is important, as it shows that hybrid sol–gel materials can be used in applications where protecting a metal or ally substrate is paramount, especially in thermally volatile environments.

(Larousse)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The biocomposites of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) involving 15 % mass fraction of calcium sulfate whiskers (CSW) were prepared via melt-blending technology, in an effort of toughening PLA and enhancing the thermal stability. The morphological structure, impact toughness, thermal stability as well as kinetic analysis on thermal decomposition for PLA/CSW composites were performed thoroughly. The results showed that CSW was organized successfully via silanization, helping to form well-bonded interfaces, and accordingly, the impact toughness increased remarkably. The thermal stability was enhanced by adding whiskers, leading to increased decomposition temperature and decreased mass conversion rate. Kinetic analysis revealed the great dispersions on the reaction order and activation energy. Though, in comparison to pure PLA, the reaction order of PLA/CSW composites increased based on calculation methods except for Carrasco's, the activation energy of the composites declined independently of the applied mathematical models, meaning that thermal decomposition of PLA phase was accelerated by the introduced CSW.

Tannage Résumé : Thermal degradation of vegetable-tanned leather fiber (VLF) was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis aiming to know the exact kinetics and degradation mechanism. The thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curves showed that decomposition of the VLF occurs mainly in the range of 150–600 °C, and the latter exhibits asymmetrical peak with a pronounced shoulder. The decomposition process was first analyzed by deconvolution of the experimental DTG curves, followed by reconstruction of the weight loss profiles of two individual processes. Several common isoconversional approaches were applied to calculate the activation energy over a wide range of conversion for the sample, including modified Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (MKAS), Friedman, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa. The average activation energy of vegetable-tanned leather fiber was found to be 241.9 kJ mol− 1 by MKAS method. The activation energy values obtained for the pseudocomponents representing highly-crosslinked and low-crosslinked collagen in VLF were given as 190.6 and 124.8 kJ mol− 1, respectively. Generalized master plots results suggested that the reaction mechanism for highly-crosslinked collagen follows the random nucleation and growth process at conversion values lower than 0.5. When the conversion is higher than 0.5, the mechanism tends to random scission model. For low-crosslinked collagen, the degradation is mainly governed by random nucleation and nuclei growth. The gaseous products of VLF thermal degradation were analyzed with an online-coupled TG-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy system. ThermométrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Infrared-(IR) based weaponry and surveillance systems utilizing the short-wave, mid-wave, and longwave IR emissions produced by ambient to high-temperature surfaces are an existing and continually evolving threat to military platforms. The survivability and sustainability of aircraft, helicopters, ships, and land vehicles depend on adequate protection against these threats. IR emissions from an object can be reduced by the use of an easily applied, low-weight, and passive low-emissivity coating for a relatively low cost. Several low-emissivity coatings with visual camouflage colors used by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) have been formulated that have lower emissivity in the critical IR transmission windows in the thermal IR when compared with conventional military coatings. A low-emissivity IR coating based on the camouflage color Aerospace Material Specification Standard 595 36375, a color that is employed by the Royal Australian Air Force on a number of ADF platforms, was formulated and tested against two topcoat specifications, MIL-PRF-85285E and DEF(AUST) 9001A. UréeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : During the beamhouse process for nappa leather, pelts are usually limed with amino compounds such as urea, ethylenediamine, and triethanolamine. However, the interaction between amino compounds and collagen is not well known. In this work, collagen fibers were soaked in various concentrations of urea and the thermal degradation of collagen fibers were studied by the methods Horowitz-Metzger and Coats-Redfern. The mechanism of the reaction between urea and collagen fibers is discussed, wherein the thermal degradation activation energy first decreases and then increases. The lowest thermal degradation activation energy of urea processed collagen appears at 2-3 mol/L urea, suggesting that the stability of collagen is the poorest when the pelt is processed in the urea solution. At the urea concentration above 6 mol/L, the thermal degradation activation energy of the sample is similar to samples without urea processing and the higher concentrations does not have the same effect as lower concentrations of urea. The collagen fibers with a urea processing history were washed to remove the urea in them, and the samples were studied again for their thermal degradation behavior. The results indicated that the thermal degradation activation energy of the collagen fibers might recover to the unprocessed level. Therefore, it was suggested that the reaction between urea molecules and collagen fibers is reversible. Urea molecules might help to destroy some of the hydrogen bonds between collagen peptides in the urea solution. After the urea is washed out, the structure of the collagen will return to its original state, because the hydrogen bonds might be reconstructed.
