Tannage Résumé : Thermal degradation of vegetable-tanned leather fiber (VLF) was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis aiming to know the exact kinetics and degradation mechanism. The thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curves showed that decomposition of the VLF occurs mainly in the range of 150–600 °C, and the latter exhibits asymmetrical peak with a pronounced shoulder. The decomposition process was first analyzed by deconvolution of the experimental DTG curves, followed by reconstruction of the weight loss profiles of two individual processes. Several common isoconversional approaches were applied to calculate the activation energy over a wide range of conversion for the sample, including modified Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (MKAS), Friedman, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa. The average activation energy of vegetable-tanned leather fiber was found to be 241.9 kJ mol− 1 by MKAS method. The activation energy values obtained for the pseudocomponents representing highly-crosslinked and low-crosslinked collagen in VLF were given as 190.6 and 124.8 kJ mol− 1, respectively. Generalized master plots results suggested that the reaction mechanism for highly-crosslinked collagen follows the random nucleation and growth process at conversion values lower than 0.5. When the conversion is higher than 0.5, the mechanism tends to random scission model. For low-crosslinked collagen, the degradation is mainly governed by random nucleation and nuclei growth. The gaseous products of VLF thermal degradation were analyzed with an online-coupled TG-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy system. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The effects of in-situ precipitated calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on the thermal stability and decomposition kinetics of vegetable-tanned collagen fiber (VCF) are evaluated by thermogravimetry. The kinetic and mechanism analysis of the decomposition stage use an integrated procedure involving model-free methods and master-plots method. Various methods are employed to calculate the activation energy of the fibers. It is shown that VCF/CaCO3 exhibits better thermal stability than VCF in the range 22-350°C. However, thermogravimetric results also show that the presence of CaCO3 accelerates the decomposition process at higher temperatures. When the conversion values are below 0.4, the most probable decomposition mechanism for VCF and VCF/CaCO3 is random nucleation and nuclei growth (Avrami, equation A2). Above 0.4, the decomposition mechanisms of VCF and VCF/CaCO3 are most probably described by third (F3) and second (F2) order models, respectively. Morphological/elemental analysis showed calcium dispersed evenly over the VCF/CaCO3. Note de contenu : - THEORETICAL BACKGROUND : Kinetic methods - Model-free methods - Master-plots method

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Industrial wastes generated from tanneries contain large quantities of water-insoluble proteins, which may be used for the production of composite materials, renewable chemicals and energy. In this work, the pyrolysis kinetics of powdered sheep fur wastes (SFW) was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) at different heating rates from room temperature to 600°C in nitrogen atmosphere. TG results revealed that there are three stages in this process. The overall apparent activation energy (E) in the main pyrolysis stage was determined to be 275.6 kJ mol-1 by modified Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (MKAS) method. Because the pyrolysis of SFW could not be described by a single-step reaction, the experimental DTG curve of SFW was deconvoluted into three individual peaks followed by reconstruction of TG curves corresponding to three pseudo components. The average values of E obtained for these pseudo components are 234.7 kJ mol-1, 176.4 kJ mol-1, and 186.2 kJ mol-1, respectively. Generalized master-plots method indicated that the SFW pyrolysis may follow the random nucleation and growth mechanism (Avrami-Erofeev model). Reaction model functions f(α) for these pseudo components could be expressed as: f(α)=3.1(1-α)[-ln(1-α)]0.67; f(α)=3.6(1-α)[-ln(1-α)]0.72, and f(α)=3.9(1-α)[-ln(1-α)]0.74, respectively. These results may provide insight for further studies as well as for future application of pyrolysis technology for tannery wastes.
