Pigments métalliquesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : In Latvia, iron oxide pigments for paints, stains and coatings are all imported, although the land is rich in sources of iron (earth colour). The aim of this study was to evaluate earth colour deposits in Latvia and to assess the possibilities for their use in natural earth pigment manufacturing. The study included tests of colour pigments available in the Latvian market, as well as evaluation of samples from earth colour deposits in Lunkeči and Kazuleja in Latvia, to determine their quality, chemical composition, and physical characteristics. The research continued with tests of production technology for inorganic pigment manufacturing (enrichment, processing, etc.). The study results showed that the quality of the pigments obtained does not differ significantly from the supply available in the market, pointing to the potential use of natural iron oxide deposits in Latvia for inorganic pigment manufacturing. Pigments métalliquesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : With annual consumption of around one million tonnes,
synthetic iron oxides are the most important group of inorganic colour pigments. Although these products have been successfully used for many years to colour a wide range of materials, the mechanisms which give rise to their colours have not been described sufficiently to date. In the case of inorganic pigments, colouration is commonly produced by a combination of light absorption and diffusion in the visible spectral range.Note de contenu : - TESTS ON IROXIDE RED PIGMENTS : characterisation of the pigments - Structural features of the hematite lattice - Lattice absorption and colouring

- FIGURES : 1. The new cyclo pigments are ideal for the automotive industry - 2. So-called absorption pigments, produced by iron-oxide coated mica are available in copper and russet colours - 3. pearlescent coatings are most often produced by mixing thin platelets of mica or borosilicate that have been coated with a material of high refractive index, such as titanium dioxide (as shown here), iron oxide with a resin matrix - 4. When pearlescent pigments are dry blended into pre-formulated resins, surface charge incompatibilities between the two materials can cause the pigments to separate from the resin matrix, and build up in the corona spray gun tip. When the buildup becomes unstable enough, it will eventually break off as clumps, making the coated part defective or undesirable - 5. The desired visual effect of a pearlescent coating results from the interaction of light with the TiO2 coated mica or borosilicate platelets within the coating. Parallel orientation of the platelets is key - the misalignment of the coated platelets will cause light to be reflected randomly, diminishing the pearlescent luster.

Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Subjects - Light source for in vivo studies - Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy - Digital photography - In vitro visible light protection model - In vivo visible light protection - Multiple exposures of visible light and protective effect of yellow iron oxide
