Spectroscopie d'absorptionIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : With an annual consumption of around one million metric tons, synthetic iron oxides are the most important group of inorganic colour pigments. Although these products have already been used very successfully to colour a wide range of materials for many years, their colouring mechanism (causes of colouring) has not been described sufficiently to date. In the case of inorganic pigments, colouring is commonly produced by a combination of light absorption and diffusion in the visible spectral range. This publication offers a detailed description of colouring for red, yellow, orange and black iron oxides. It is explained using structural features of the respective iron oxides and findings from ligand field and molecular orbital theory (MO theory). The tests performed were carried out on phase-pure iron oxide pigments that are grouped together with selected properties in Table 1. Note de contenu : - TESTS ON IRON OXIDE RED PIGMENTS : 1. Characterisation of the pigments - 2. Structural features of the hematite lattice - 3. Light absorption and colouring
- TESTS ON IRON OXIDE YELLOW PIGMENTS : 1. Characterisation of products - 2. Structural features of the goethite lattice - 3. Absorption spectrum and colouring
- TESTS ON THE IRON OXIDE ORANGE PIGMENT : 1. Characterisation and structural features - 2. Light absorption and colouring

Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : The four main manufacturing processes for red iron oxides are described in relation to their environ-mental impacts and the quality of pigments they produce. Calcination processes produce harder and more heat-resistant grades, but brighter yellowish reds can be obtained by the other processes. Note de contenu : - Light absorption and diffusion issues
- How particle size modifies colour
- Synthetic iron oxides have a long history
- The Laux process and its limitations
- The precipitation process

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Iron oxide pigments are used on a very large scale in many industries. The ways in which the structures of a major group of these pigments (the spinels) affects their colour is explored in detail. The absorption spectrum of some of these pigments was studied and related to their crystal structure and the electron orbital transitions that can occur. Note de contenu : - Two groups of coloured iron oxides compared
- Structural aspects of the zinc ferrite spinel lattice
- More complex cation distribution in other spinels
- Colouration and absorption spectrum of zinc ferrite
- Colouration of magnesium ferrite
