However, a key raw material is mostly obtained from petroleum, a resource which is environmentally problematic and limited in its availability. Bio-based UV-curable PU coatings offer a way out of this dilemma. Note de contenu : - Experimental

In this study, polyol was studied as a diluent for formulations containing cycloaliphatic epoxide and oxetane in order to evaluate the effect on coatings properties and curing kinetics. The addition of polyol was shown to have an effect on both mobility of the cation as a chain transfer agent, along with the more general effect of flexibility, as evidenced by the hardness data, which increased when a small amount of polyol was added, but decreased as more polyol was included in the formulation. In terms of crosslinking kinetics, it was found that the inclusion of polyol resulted in an increase in conversion during UV irradiation. The level of polyol also had an effect on other properties, such as Tg and crosslink density.

The polyesters were designed with similar molecular weights and levels of unsaturation, but with otherwise widely varying backbone compositions. UV-curable coatings were formulated with stoichiometric levels of triethylenglycol divinyl ether and a photoinitiator. The resulting coatings had a broad range of properties, which were found to correlate with the properties and compositions of the polyester backbone polymers. A relatively flexible backbone resulted in lower glass transition temperatures (Tg). The polymer Tg was found to influence the conversion of double bonds achieved during UV curing. Reaction kinetics were evaluated for the coating systems and the results confirmed that the Tg of the systems influenced the double bond conversion. Thermal stability and König pendulum hardness were also found to vary with the backbone composition of the constituent polyester.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this research, high-performance epoxy acrylate (EA) coating formulations that contain various acrylate-modified diepoxy siloxane (DESA) intermediates were synthesized and characterized. Firstly, diepoxy siloxane (DES) intermediates, which have varying chain lengths (Mw = 370–3300 Da), were modified by acrylic acid via the ring-opening reaction oxirane group. DESA intermediates were then used in the preparation of ultraviolet (UV)-curable EA formulations. EA was also synthesized via acrylic acid modification of a commercial bisphenol-A-based epoxy resin, used as the standard formulation. EA-based UV-curable formulas were applied on substrates and then cured by UV irradiation for investigating the coating performances. Subsequently, performances of the UV-cured coatings were evaluated by the various test techniques, such as hardness, gloss, cross-cut adhesion force scratch resistance, contact angle, yellowing resistance, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and color measurement. The effect of DESA variety on the formations was examined compared to both themselves and the standard formulation. The results showed that the varying amounts and chain lengths of DESA influenced UV-curable coatings’ properties; particularly, the scratch resistance, contact angle, and yellowing resistance significantly enhanced with the increasing chain length of DESA. High-performance UV-curable EA formulations could be produced with the scratch resistance of 4 N, the contact angle of 95°, and high yellowing resistance (ΔE = 0.35).

The structure, surface morphology, and thermal stability of the composites were characterized by FTIR, SEM, and TGA, respectively. As the main resin in the UV-curable coating, the effects of particle sizes of silica on the gloss, abrasion resistance, adhesion, and hydrophilic properties of coatings were measured. The results show that the agglomeration phenomenon of the modified silica in the composite coating was obviously improved. The smaller the particle size, the lower the gloss of coatings with the same content. The adhesion strength and abrasion resistance of the composites were superior to those of pure UV-curing coatings without silica. The greater the particle sizes of the added modified silica, the stronger the hydrophilicity of the composite.
