Thermo-protectionIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : The objective of our research was to investigate the heat-protecting effect of a product ex vivo and in vivo on human hair fibres.
- Methods : A preparatory study was carried out in order to determine an optimal threshold of thermal stress. For this, the structure of cross-sections of the hair fibre was observed by optical microscopy. Then, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Confocal Raman Spectroscopy (CRS) were applied to analyse ex vivo and in vivo morphological and molecular damage in hair structure after heat stress. Finally, in vivo tests were used to collect consumer perception.
- Results : The preparatory study enabled us to determine an optimal stress threshold of 10 heating cycle for SEM and 5 heating cycle for CRS. Based on spectral hierarchical classification using Ward's clustering algorithm, the ex vivo Raman results show that the spectral signature of the hair treated and heated is very close to the negative control. This shows that the product preserves the keratin structure after thermal stress. These results were also confirmed by an in vivo Raman analysis performed on hair samples from 5 donors. In concordance with Raman results, SEM shows that treated hair presents lesser “bubbles” and “crackling” on the hair surface. Finally, the in vivo studies proved that hair was more protected from heat.
- Conclusion : The authors concluded that the product shows protective properties with respect to morphological and molecular heat damage. We also demonstrate that the product promotes the α-helix keratin conformation and preserves the S-S disulfide bands.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Hair care product composition (INCI list) - Human hair samples collection and treatment - Preparatory study - Scanning electron microscopy observation - Raman spectroscopic analysis - In-vivo tests - Statistical analysis

Spectroscopie RamanIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the present investigation, a polyacrylamide (PAM) – graphene oxide (GO)-single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) composite has been prepared through a cost effective solution cast method and physical properties (electrical and mechanical) measurements have been carried out. The GO sheets contain oxygen functional groups which enhance the interfacial adhesion with the polymer matrix, while the SWNTs act as wires joining the GO together in the composite matrix. This interconnected network creates a conducting path, lowering film resistance and improving PAM films’ electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Raman study demonstrated that carbon nanofiller (SWNTs, GO) and polymer PAM have good interfacial bonding. The electrical conductivity and mechanical characteristics (hardness and elastic modulus) of these composite films were enhanced at a loading of 15 wt% GO and 15 wt% SWNTs in PAM matrix. Electrical conductivity of GO (15 wt%) – SWNTs (15 wt%)-PAM composite film was found to be 2.8 × 10−2 S/cm, which is five orders of magnitude higher than that of the PAM polymer. In comparison to pure PAM polymer, the elastic modulus and hardness are found to be 1.14 and 65 times higher, respectively. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The cost of corrosion in one of the biggest economic challenges in a number of industries worldwide. Although complete eradication of corrosion is impossible, significant reductionin the corrosion rate can be achieved using various corrosion mitigation techniques, most notably using protective polymeric coatings. In this regard, the eco-friendly properties of waterborne paints have been attracting widespread attention in recent years due to the promulgation of lower allowable volatile organic compound content. However, these coatings are prone to increased penetration of moisture and corrosive species. To improve the protective properties of the coating we incorporated two non-toxic organic corrosion additives into a waterborne acrylic paint formulation and evaluated their anticorrosion properties using a combination of electrochemical tests, microscopy, and spectroscopic techniques. Spectroscopie RamanIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : In the field of corneobiology, the skin barrier has been pointed out to play a crucial role in skin homeostasis. In the treatment of dry skin, it is important to repair and augment the skin barrier in order to achieve positive and long-lasting results. To adequately describe the hydration state of the human skin, a number of complementary measuring techniques are often employed. Therefore, besides the classic methods of corneometry and the determination of the transepidermal water loss, we tested our moisturising active Hydro-Gain and the two industry standards, glycerol and hyaluronic acid, in a PCR-array and in a study using confocal Raman spectroscopy. In the comparison to glycerol and hyaluronic acid, Hydro-Gain gave the best results regarding skin moisturisation and we also found evidence that Hydro-Gain stimulates strengthening of the skin barrier.
