Due to the high surface tension of these systems, and the high viscosity of polyisocyanates relative to the polyol dispersion, problems still remain with mixing in industrial applications. The high viscosity causes gel formation in the in-line mixing apparatus, and the high surface tension and air entrapment cause microfoam in the final film. Therefore, the rheology of dynamic and static mixing of the system was studied in detail. The results show that the critical parameters for controlling the properties of the coatings are 1) viscosity of polyisocyanates and 2) particle size of the mixture of polyol and polyisocyanate under both low and high shear flow fields. With this knowledge, the spray equipment and formulation were modified for wood applications to give better spraying with no gel formation and reduced microfoam. With the U.S. accounting for roughly one-third of the adhesives used worldwide, demand for cost-effective, efficient products that meet the desired criteria—formulating, mixing, metering, and dispensing—are all critical components that must be identified and optimized to ensure that quality and quantity demands are met.
Many different starting materials are available in the formulation of two-part adhesives, all of which will require a variety of mixing, dispensing and application methods. A discussion of such breadth and depth is covered in the wide assortment of texts,1 with this article focusing primarily on two-part (2K) polyurethane (PUR) reactive adhesives, which cure at room temperature, and the mixing conditions to consider when selecting equipment. Table 1 provides a brief summary of various properties that should be considered throughout the numerous steps in the manufacture of a 2K PUR system.Note de contenu : - Ambient-cure 2K PUR adhesives

Arsenic

Substances dangereusesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coatings have been used since time immemorial for decorative and protective purposes. During the initial periods, when not much information was available regarding the health impact of the raw materials, there was no thought given or restrictions put on use of any ingredients in coatings. Some of the raw materials like white lead (lead carbonate), red lead (lead oxide), hexavalent chromium compounds, and other similar compounds were being used in large quantities to get specific paint film properties. This not only affected human health but also with no effective effluent treatment contaminated soil and water resources. With progress in technology and diagnostics, lead and chromium compounds have been identified as carcinogens. The developed countries (Europe and USA) were the first to ban the use of lead in their products in the 1970s and 1980s, but due to mainly economic reasons, these are still being used in the developing countries. As the long-term health impact is too much to bear, regulations/legislations have been enacted by the governments restricting use of lead/chrome in paints. The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (GAELP), a joint association formed under the United Nations Environment programme, and World Health Organization have agreed to phase out manufacture and sale of paints containing lead by 2020. Similar restrictions exist for many other compounds used in coatings. The article attempts to present a synopsis of the history of coatings composition, impact of the heavy metals on health and environment, and the options available for shifting to safer coating composition. As major focus of the world is on lead elimination, it has been covered in more detail, but the article also provides information on other metals, namely cadmium, chromium, mercury, arsenic, antimony, tin, nickel, manganese, cobalt, etc., and their current status.

The ternary mixture (Water – ethanol – ethyl acetate) reported in this study provided for good solubility/dispersion of leather chemicals. Average particle size of the syntan/dye in solvent / water remaining the same, particle size distribution of dyes and syntans was advantageous in the solvent medium, leading to better diffusion. Amongst various trials, neutralization of the leathers after tanning in solvent medium followed by use of neutralization syntans was found to be more advantageous to obtain leather properties comparable to conventional controls. The adsorption studies of dye used in the present study followed Freundlich model in both solvent and water medium indicates multilayer adsorption. Physical properties of the leathers were similar to that of control, indicating clearly that the solvent had no adversary effect on collagen and also provided for good diffusion and fixation of chemicals. The method thus reported in this study could provide for a minimum change approach to leather processing with ample contribution to water saving.
