This review comprehensively discusses the state of the art of superhydrophobic surface modification with a particular focus on the corrosion inhibiting quality. Generally, there are two main approaches to induce superhydrophobicity, namely application of low surface energy coating and roughening of a surface to a binary micro/nano-rough structure. These strategies, which are often combined and found to complement one another, have been successfully demonstrated to provide corrosion-resistant improvement with moderate durability for a number of metals and alloys, including stainless steels, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, copper, and zinc. The curing agents were synthesized and products were analyzed by chemical, spectroscopic, and chromatographic techniques. In the next part, coatings were formulated by varying the ratio of epoxy resin to curing agents on equivalent basis, such as 1:0.6, 1:0.8, and 1:1. The coatings were applied on mild steel panels and cured at 150°C for 30 min. The resultant coatings were evaluated for performance properties including mechanical, chemical, optical, thermal anticorrosive, and flame retardant properties. It was observed that with an increase in concentration of silicon–sulfur containing curing agents, water contact angles of the coatings substantially increased. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Tafel analysis, and salt spray studies revealed that anticorrosive properties of the coatings improved with an increase in concentration of silicon and sulfur. In spite of synergistic effect of silicon–sulfur, only marginal improvement in flame retardant properties was observed.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, a self-healing powder coating based on micro-encapsulated linseed oil is reported. Linseed oil was chosen as the self-healing agent for its excellent film forming capability and Poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) was chosen as a shell material. Microcapsules were synthesised by in-situ polymerisation. A powder coating based on thermoplastic powder was used. Microcapsules were mixed with the powder coating and sprayed electrostatically on the cold rolled steel. The thermal stability of microcapsules was evaluated with TGA. The corrosion evaluation of the coating was done with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (FIS) and salt water immersion tests. The experimental results have demonstrated a strong inhibition of corrosion in the micro-encapsulated system. Furthermore, impedance measurements has shown an increase of impedance modulus of the micro-encapsulated system during immersion in the corrosive medium, which is reiated to the suppression of active corrosion activities and healing of the scratched areas. Healing of the coating was also demonstrated by optical microscopy. This study successfully demonstrated the self-healing activity of micro-encapsulated linseed oil in protecting steel surfaces against corrosion in powder coatings. The authors discuss a study to test this contention, quantifying the effect of coating systems of varying durability (and hence varying maintenance requirements) on the environmental impact of a steel bridge over the course of its functional life. Surfaces (Physique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, epoxy/2pack coatings containing polyaniline (PANI) in combination with Ag and ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized. The nanoparticles were incorporated with bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether epoxy resin and polyamino-amide. The mechanical properties of the fabricated coatings, such as the pendulum hardness, scratch resistance, and impact strength, were studied. The composition of the fabricated coatings was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy measurements. The thermal degradation and indentations were characterized through the use of differential scanning calorimetry and nano-indentation techniques, respectively. The surface morphology of the fabricated coatings was characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The synergistic effects of the Ag and ZnO nanoparticles on the corrosion resistance of the coatings after different exposure periods in 3.5% NaCl solutions were determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All the results were consistent with one another and confirmed that the addition of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles improved the mechanical properties of the coatings. This effect also led to a notable increase in the corrosion resistance of the PANI coatings. Note de contenu : - ATR-IR measurement
