ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In the present research die swell phenomenon is investigated for the viscoelastic polymer melts both experimentally and by developing a mathematical model in a circular die for high impact polystyrenes (HIPS), high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Die swell is generally attributed to the fluid stress field when the fluid flows in a die. The Leonov-like equations as a conformational model are solved simultaneously with dynamic equation of momentum transfer to predict the stress field for a viscoelastic fluid in a circular die. The average molecular weight, the polymer relaxation time and the polymer mobility tensors are determined using the experimental measurements of shear viscosity. Then, based on those data, a model is developed. The results predicted by the model for flow stress field are then used to calculate die swell ratio by Tanner’s analytical model. Die swell ratio is also found out experimentally using a capillary rheometer for the samples. Comparison of the die swell results predicted by the model and measured experimentally show very good agreement for the polymers. RotorsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Among several operational parameters such as rotor speed, fill factor and ram pressure, the orientation of the mixing rotors with respect to each other plays a significant role in the mixing performance. An understanding of the flow field and mixing characteristics associated with the orientations of the rotors will help in obtaining a final product with a better quality. For that purpose three phase angle orientations: 45°, 90° and 180° are investigated here in a 75% filled chamber with two rotors counter-rotating at an even speed of 20 min–1. Two dimensional, transient, isothermal, incompressible simulations are carried out using a CFD code. While an Eulerian multiphase method was used to solve for the transport variables in the two phases: rubber and air, the volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to solve for the interface between the two phases. A non-Newtonian Carreau-Yasuda model was used to characterize rubber. Massless particles were injected in the domain to calculate statistical quantities in order to assess dispersive and distributive mixing characteristics associated with rotor orientations. The flow field is analyzed via pressure and velocity contours. Dispersive mixing was analyzed through histograms of mixing index and cumulative probability distribution functions of maximum shear stress experienced by the particles. Distributive mixing was quantified statistically using cluster distribution index and interchamber material transfer. The phase angle of 180° was found to perform the best in terms of both dispersive and distributive mixing characteristics. Note de contenu : - PHYSICAL PROBLEM DESCRIPTION : GEOMETRY AND MATERIALS

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In capillary rheometry of a polymer melt, the total pressure drop consists of three primary components: shear viscosity, extensional viscosity, and normal stress differences. Traditionally, viscoelastic constitutive equations have been used to produce accurate predictions regarding the pressure drop. It is difficult to investigate the primary components in past experimental measurements and numerical computations. The useful improvement of the classic White-Metzner viscoelastic constitutive equation coupled with the weighted shear/extension viscosity is performed in isothermal capillary flow simulations. It is significant to analyze the extension-induced pressure drop for a short die and the shear-induced pressure drop for a long die, along with a small contribution of normal stress differences. Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : A kind of discontinuous baffle, which had the same length as the non-baffle zone distance, was inserted in the unwound channel of a single screw extruder to enhance mixing in the screw channel. The periodic unit of the flow channel was modeled as a dynamic system of complex duct flow. The finite volume method was used to solve the three-dimensional flow of purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid. Fluid particle tracking was performed by a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The effect of the baffle height on the mixing kinematics was investigated numerically. Poincaré sections were applied to reveal the different patterns and sizes of the KAM tubes. Distributive mixing was then visualized by the evolution of passive tracers initially located at different positions. The variance index and residence time distribution (RTD) were used to evaluate the statistical results. Among the four test cases, the results showed that the case with the baffle height equal to the screw depth had the largest chaotic mixing region, but the shortest mean residence time and the narrowest broadening of RTD under the same pressure gradient.
