VernisIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the present study the effect of TiO2-SiO2-GLYMO nanocomposite on surface properties of leather was investigated. The TiO2-SiO2-GLYMO composite was prepared through the sol-gel route from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and titanium n-butoxide (TBO). 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) was added as coupling agent to provide a stable bond between metal oxides and leather substrate. The prepared composite was applied by spraying on the top coat of leathers in finishing. The surface properties observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed an even and homogenous coating obtained on leather by application of the composite in the presence of lacquer. The chemical structure of composite films was examined via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Si-O-Ti bond and opening of epoxy rings of GLYMO were revealed. The presence of Ti and Si in the composite treated leather samples was ascertained by inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results of the physical and fastness tests indicated that the use of TiO2-SiO2-GLYMO nanocomposite improves some performance characteristics of leather such as finish adhesion, dry and wet rubbing fastness, colour fastness to light and UV light. The results are promising for the refinement of leather surface with the application of the nanocomposite in the finishing process. VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the North American coatings market, traditional solventborne resins are still used to a large extent, enabled by regulations that allow for the use of certain solvents exempt from restrictions placed on most volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the United States. The future of the exempt status of parachlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF) and tertiary butyl acetate (TBAc) is a concern in certain districts of California, and other regions may follow suit.
Coating companies are ramping up their research efforts in formulating paint without exempt solvents. Researchers are opting to formulate with high solids resins.
High-performance acrylic polyols were studied to understand the effect of various resin parameters on coatings performance. A set of resins with 80-90% solids was tested in pigmented topcoat formulations.
These topcoats contained VOCs ranging from 200 to 250 g/L, without the use of exempt solvents. Various conventional and advanced film properties were evaluated, including weathering performance by xenon arc exposure, cure kinetics using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and crosslink density by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA).
Correlation was obtained between coatings performance properties and resin characteristics such as equivalent weight, glass transition temperature, etc. The understanding of structure property correlation offers tremendous value not only for North American coatings researchers but also to the global community.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL FINDINGS : Resin characteristics - Formulation and evaluation of clear films - Formulation of white topcoat - Evaluation of white topcoat

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Literature discussing coating mechanical properties and mar resistance is reviewed. Commercial car washing is the standard environmental source of damage. Most lab tests involve rubbing the coating with an abrasive and measuring the level of damage. The types of deformation that result are elastic, plastic, and fracture. For glassy coatings mar resistance is optimized at an intermediate toughness. The author proposes that optimization occurs due to the minimization of the number of both plastic- and fracture-type scratches. In addition, minimization occurs because the yield stress and toughness are in balance. Elastomeric coatings appear to have a minimum in mar resistance at intermediate crosslink density Note de contenu : - Definition
