(Wikipedia)

The analytical characterization of the magnesium coating was performed by scanning electron spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of Mg-coated carbon steel was assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open-circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves in 0.03% sodium chloride solution. The electrochemical results showed that the self-corrosion current density (icorr) of magnesium-coated steel was 0.32 mA cm?2 (about 1.8% of that of uncoated steel). Impedance results showed an increase of the total impedance when magnesium coating was applied on steel substrate. The corrosion protection was ensured by a two-step mechanism. The first step was cathodic polarization; the second step was the formation of a barrier due to magnesium oxides composed of MgO, Mg(OH2) and Mg(OH3)Cl. Hybrid sol was prepared from Ti-isopropoxide and N-phenyl-3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane. The structure, morphology, and properties of the coating were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermo gravimetric analysis. The corrosion performances of the sol–gel-coated samples were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and standard salt spray tests. The hybrid coatings were found to be dense, more uniform, and defect free. In addition, the coatings also proved its excellent corrosion protection on phosphated steel sheet. [article]

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, the effect of blisters on the performance of protective coatings was investigated. Artificial blisters were generated by potentiostatic DC polarization of an epoxy-coated aluminum substrate and characterized using optical microscopy, electron microscopy (SEM), scanning electrochemical microscopy, as well as by scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) measurement. Impedance measured above blisters displayed high values, typical of an intact undamaged coating. SKP measurement above the blister identified regions of likely corrosion beneath it, which was verified by SEM. SEM images showed pitting-like corrosion beneath the blisters, implying that high impedance measured on delaminated coatings may correspond to the delaminated polymeric film. SKP was also able to identify regions of invisible delamination. Note de contenu : - Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results

Titre : Corrosion domesticated and in the wild Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Carl Reed, Auteur ; Kat Coronado, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 46-53 Note générale : Bibliogr.

By combining these observational attributes to mechanistic attributes previously examined, the use of accelerated corrosion testing can be better used as an indicator of how a coating will perform in various environmental conditions.
