Résumé : |
Corrosion of metallic materials takes place via an electrochemical reaction at a specific corrosion rate along with non-electrochemical process. Consequently, the life of a metallic material in a particular corrosive environment can be accurately predicted. This is not the case with non-metallic materials. Non-metallic materials may deteriorate in various ways and manners, but not by electrochemical corrosion process. Only metals corrode according to the accepted definition of corrosion used in general. The mechanism of deterioration of the two classes of materials serves to distinguish the corrosion reaction of metals, largely electrochemical in character, from the physical and sometimes chemical processes that attend degradation of non-metals. However, the discussion of the properties of many non-metals and semi metals are also very imperative due to their continuous growth in practical applications especially in corrosive environment. |
