StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, tree bark extracts were assessed as functional additives to provide protection in waterborne acrylic- and alkyd-based coatings. Tree bark extracts acted as natural photostabilizers and inhibited UV degradation with high UV absorption capacity. The coating systems comprising bark extracts were compared to the control coating groups comprising ultraviolet light absorbers (UVA) of the hydroxyphenyl-s-triazine (HPT) for acrylic and nonbasic amino ether (NOR) hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) for alkyd. Scots pine surfaces coated with acrylic and alkyd coatings were exposed to artificial weathering for 2016 h. Three different trees (maritime pine, alder and Calabrian pine) with high antioxidant activity and phenol content were used for this purpose. The chemical structure of acrylic and alkyd coating systems was also examined using ATR–FTIR spectroscopy. The weathering resistance of coating systems containing extracts was evaluated in terms of their color changes and surface roughness through macroscopic evaluation, and they were compared to commercial UV absorber. The lowest color change was observed in the alkyd-based coatings with the bark extract. For the alkyd coatings, the color change (∆E) in the control samples was 24.85, whereas it was found to be 4.68, 5.92 and 7.80 in the test samples containing Calabrian pine, maritime pine and alder bark, respectively. However, color stabilization of the acrylic coatings with UV absorber was found to be much better than the acrylic coatings with extracts. The alkyd coating systems with extracts did not exhibit the same performance for surface roughness. The alkyd coating with the UV absorber provided a smoother surface than that with bark extracts. The acrylic coatings with alder and maritime extracts provided the best results. Acrylic coating may be compatible with (Calabrian) bark extracts. According to the obtained results, it was seen that tree bark extracts in wood coating systems have a potential to substitute commercial UV absorbers as a natural product. Fibres de sisalLe sisal (Agave sisalana) est une plante de la famille des Agavaceae originaire de l'est du Mexique où on la trouve également sous l'appellation de henequén. Sisal est également le nom de la fibre extraite des feuilles de cette plante. Très résistante, cette fibre sert à la fabrication de cordage, de tissus grossiers et de tapis.
Le sisal est utilisé dans la filière bois pour tous les produits liés destinés au bois énergie et à la trituration (papeterie, panneau de particules). Leur stockage est de courte durée (le sisal est peu durable) et cette fibre végétale peut être mélangée au bois (ne pollue pas la matière comme une fibre synthétique).

Tribologie (technologie)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : An experiential research on mechanical and tribological characteristics of snake grass and sisal fiber reinforced hybrid polymer (epoxy) composites was carried out and reported in this article. The snake grass and sisal fibers were initially treated with 5% sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Hybrid composite samples were fabricated using a compression moulding technique with a total fiber weight ratio of 30% and an epoxy resin weight ratio of 70%. The proportions of snake grass and sisal fibers in the hybrid composites were 70:30, 50:50, and 30:70. The fabricated hybrid composite samples were subjected to flexural, tensile, interlaminar shear strength, Shore D hardness, water absorption, and wear tests as per ASTM international standards, and the outcomes were compared with the results of snake grass and sisal mono fiber composites. The results disclosed that the 30:70 (SG:S) hybrid composite has higher mechanical characteristics than those of other hybrid and mono fiber composites. Also, the 30:70 hybrid sample performed at par with the sisal mono composite in wear and water absorption characteristics. Optical microscopy examination of alkali-treated natural hybrid and mono fiber composites displayed excellent results in terms of interfacial bonding between polymer and fiber. Trema orientalisTrema orientalis est une espèce de plantes arborescentes. Elle appartient à la famille des Ulmaceae ou Celtidaceae selon la classification classique ou à celle des Cannabaceae selon la classification phylogénétique.
On le trouve en Afrique du Sud jusqu'en Afrique tropicale ainsi que dans les régions chaudes d'Asie. Il a été naturalisé à Hawaï.Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Researchers around the world are in continuous endeavor to develop environment friendly tanning agent due to adverse effect of conventionally used chromium during leather tanning. Recent trend of tanning is thus heading to chrome-free and greener chemical processing options. Vegetable tanning is an exoteric leather processing technique because of their lower pollution load on the environment. Considering the inadequacy and high costing for the commercialized tannins, development of alternative tannins from locally available plants and their characterizations are important. In this research, the stem barks of Trema Orientalis (L.) were extracted at different temperatures employing water solvent with or without additives (sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphite) to attain phenolic-rich extractives. To ascertain appropriateness as a vegetable tanning agent, the obtained extracts were thereafter characterized in respect to yield, total phenolic content, tannin content and molecular structure. The extraction yield for all extracts improves and the quality remains nearly unchanged with temperature rising. The elevated concentration of chemical additives enhances the extraction yield but lessens the quality of extracts. In terms of extraction yield and the quality of extracts the best condition for extraction was discerned at 80°C with water solvent. This water extract has a decent extent of phenolic and tannin content of 266.13 mg Gallic acid equivalent/ gm of dry extract and 30.12 % respectively. The final extract exhibits excellent leather retanning tendency comparable to the commercial quebracho tannins. The enzymolysis conditions were optimised via a single-factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM) using the FRSA as the optimisation index. The optimal enzymolysis conditions were as follows: the optimal enzyme was alkaline protease, the enzymolysis pH was 8.7, the dosage of alkaline protease was 8000U/g, the temperature was 50°C, the time was 5 hours, the concentration of substrate was 5%. The FRSAs of hydroxyl, DPPH and superoxide anion radicals of the optimally prepared YCDP could be up to 39.63%, 71.08% and 69.93%, respectively, which were higher than those of CDP prepared from cattle hide under the same conditions. Further identification analyses showed that the components of YCDP with lower molecular weight contributed more to the FRSA of YCDP. Elliott (black chokeberry) skin wastes from the production of Aronia fruit juice were extracted using a batch extraction method and a novel integrated extraction-adsorption process. Optimum conditions for batch extraction were as follows: 60 °C, 3 h, acid (0.1% v/v hydrochloric acid), biomass-to-solvent ratio of 1:16, and biomass-to-solid phase extraction resin ratio of 1:1. The integrated extraction-adsorption process gave improved anthocyanin yields of higher quality when the process was performed for 3 h without cooling of the circulating liquid, and with a flow rate of 1.3 ml s-1. Overall, the new method showed better anthocyanin yield and purity compared with the batch method, increasing the extraction yield by ca. 20% (5.25 6.34 mg g-1 dry weight of pomace) and increasing anthocyanin content by ca. 40% (19.9 28.4% w/w dry weight of extract). This method also simplified the process as three steps were eliminated saving time and energy. Furthermore, the integrated extraction-adsorption method is industrially scalable to produce large quantities of anthocyanins. In the batch method, anthocyanins present in A. melanocarpa skins were identified as cyanidin-3-O-galactoside (38.8%), cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside (6.4%), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (3.6%), cyanidin-3-O-xyloside (0.5%), and the cyanidin aglycon (50.7%); in the continuous method, anthocyanin content was cyanidin-3-O-galactoside (45.7%), cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside (16%), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (3.6%), cyanidin-3-O-xyloside (2.7%), and the cyanidin aglycon (32%). The integrated extraction-adsorption method was shown to be substantially less susceptible to acid-catalysed anthocyanin decomposition processes. All anthocyanins were derived from only one anthocyanidin parent structure (cyanidin), and only monosaccharide glycosides were identified, which is unusual when compared with other berries that typically have more anthocyanidins and/or greater glycosylation diversity.
