The dyeing and fastness properties of prina (crude olive cake/pomace) extract were evaluated to fill the gap in this field. This very cheap biomass was utilised (80 g/l) by applying chemical solvent-free aqueous extraction to dye wool fabric with only small amounts (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 g/l) of metallic mordants, namely alum, iron(II) sulfate, copper(II) sulfate, stannous chloride, and potassium dichromate, and avoiding the use of alkali, acid, chemicals, and auxiliaries in dyeing and washing processes. Colour shades of beige, cream, sandy, apricot, straw, cumin, mustard, olive, and khaki were obtained. Significant differences in colour strength and CIELab coordinates were observed, depending on mordant type and mordanting method. Copper(II) sulfate and iron(II) sulfate ensured the most significant colour changes and nuances, the darkest colours, and the best light fastness values. Prina extract itself (without mordant) has a light fastness of 3 (fair) and excellent wash fastness of 4–5, both for colour change and bleeding. Irrespective of the concentration and mordanting method, alum, stannous chloride, and potassium dichromate did not generate a light fastness improvement compared with the control sample. Although good light and wash fastness values have been achieved without mordants, it is necessary to use them to widen the colour gamut and to obtain increased colour strength. Fibres végétales -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Sansevieria trifasciata fibre has low costs, wide availability, high specific strength, renewability and low density and can be used as reinforcement in polymer composites. This review aims to evaluate the recent developments in Sansevieria trifasciata fibre and its application in polymer composites. This was done to evaluate the progress of research, identify knowledge gaps and predict interesting areas for future work. Extraction of Sansevieria trifasciata fibre is mainly by decortication and water retting. The composites are prepared mostly by hand lay-up and cured by either compression molding (cold or hot press) or casting. The surface treatment of S. trifasciata fibre can enhance the fibre-matrix interfacial adhesion and improve the mechanical properties of the composites. S. trifasciata fibre-reinforced composites have relatively good mechanical properties, which depend on processing methods, fibre loading, fibre length and fibre orientation. Future work is suggested in the area of detailed chemical compositions, novel preparation techniques, evaluation of electrical properties, lifecycle analysis and techno-economic analysis.
Tannage Résumé : Complete inhibition of Cr6+ formation from chrome-tanned leather can be achieved by treatment with a three-component inhibitor containing 1.0mmol 3(2)-t-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, 0.01mmol ascorbic acid, and 0.001mmol collagen peptide. In the present paper, chrome-tanned leather was heat-aged at 80°C for 24 hours and then stored at relative humidity of 33%, 65% or 97% for 12 months to investigate spontaneous conversion of Cr6+ to Cr3+ and to clarify availability of these inhibitors over long-term storage. The amount of Cr6+ decreased as the storage period increased, and was undetectable after 8 months. However, a second reheat-ageing resulted in reformation of Cr6+. This conversion to Cr3+ increased with the water content of the leather. Chrome-tanned leather treated with the three-component inhibitor maintained perfect inhibition of Cr6+ formation for 12 months, even if heat-aged again. Extraction liquide-liquide
