Silicones -- Emploi en cosmétologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Objective : Organosiloxanes are prevalent in personal care products (PCPs) due to the desired properties they impart in the usage and application of such products. However, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has recently published restriction proposals on the amount of two cyclic siloxanes, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D5), allowed in wash off products such as shampoos and conditioners which are discharged down the drain during consumer use. This legislation will require that reliable analytical methods are available for manufacturers and government agencies to use in documenting compliance with the restrictions. This article proposes a simple analytical method to enable accurate measurement of these compounds down to the circa 0.1 weight per cent level in PCPs.
Methods : Although gas chromatography methods are reported in the literature for quantitation of D4 and D5 in several matrices including PCPs, the potential for generation of false positives due to contamination, co-elution and in situ generation of cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS) is always present and needs to be controlled. This report demonstrates the applicability of using a combination of emulsion break, liquid–liquid extraction and silylation sample preparation followed by GC-FID analysis as a suitable means of analysing PCPs for specific cVMS.
Results : The reliability and limitations of such methodology were demonstrated through several round-robin studies conducted in the laboratories of a consortium of silicone manufacturers. In addition, this report presents examples of false positives encountered during development of the method and presents a comparative analysis between this method and a published QuEChERS sample preparation procedure to illustrate the potential for generation of false positives when an inappropriate approach is applied to determination of cVMS in personal care products.
Conclusion : This report demonstrates that an approach to determine cVMS levels in personal care products is to perform an emulsion break on the sample, isolate the non-polar phase from the emulsion break and treat with a silylation reagent to abate potential in situ formation of cyclics during the course of GC-FID analysis. Round-robin studies conducted in laboratories representing multiple siloxane manufacturers demonstrated the reliability of the GC-FID method when measuring cVMS in PCPs down to circa 0.1%.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : GC method - Chemicals - Materials - Gas chromatograph - GC method and sample preparation - Calibration - Inter-laboratory round-robin studies - Preparation of shampoo and conditioner lab formulation samples - Commercially available personal care product samples - Additional sample preparations and analysis by GC-MS

Accordingly, laboratories in the leather and footwear sectors have been obliged to develop analytical methods to determine the presence of this substance given the absence of an official method. The ban on DMFU as laid down in Decision 2009/251 of the European Union establishes a maximum concentration of DMFU in products of 0.1 mg/kg. A simple non-destructive rapid method based on manual headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is proposed to detect DMFU in leather and footwear. Thereafter, the samples in which DMFU is detected are analysed by a solid-liquid extraction (SLE) with acetone after which DMFU is quantitatively determined by GC-MS. The quantitative method is validated in terms of linearity, precision, sensitivity and recovery; demonstrating its reliability. Quantification is performed using naphthalene-D8 as internal standard. The detection limits are 0.005 mg/kg and 0.03 mg/kg for the HS-SPME-GC-MS and SLE-GC-MS methods, respectively. Given that these limits are below the maximum limit of 0.1 mg/kg imposed by the European Union, the proposed methods are suitable for determining DMFU content in real samples. Spectrométrie de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The composition of fatty spew on leather was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Meanwhile, the volatile substances in the fogging test of leather were identified by GC-MS. With the combination of all the data obtained, it was found that the predominant components of fatty spew were palmitic acid methyl ester, oleic acid methyl ester and stearic acid methyl ester, and their relative content ratio is approximately 8 : 1 : 1. An interesting phenomenon was that no fatty acids are detected in fatty spew although they are commonly regarded as the origin of this defect. These facts strongly suggest that the fatty acid methyl esters existing in fatliquors are the main origin of fatty spew defect in leather, and also one of the probable contributions to fogging.
- Il est peu soluble dans l'eau (13 à 20 g·l-1 à 20 °C) ;
- Il est miscible avec la plupart des solvants organiques ;

Volumétrie (chimie analytique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The content of free fatty acids was investigated by qualitative and quantitative methods. The cable-extraction method was used to test six different types of leather sample in which the dichloromethane was as extraction agent. After the extract was methyl esterified it was again extracted by petroleum ether. Then the colour and titration method were used to quantitatively analyse the extract. Meantime, the effect of different decolourisation ways on the quantitative analysis was studied. The properties of extraction products were characterized by GC-MS. The results show that the main components of free fatty acids in leather are oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and some linoleic acid. When the level of ethanol in the decolourising solution is 80% to 85% the effect is, overall, better. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials and apparatus

Substances dangereusesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Objective : Polyethoxylated surfactants are widely used in the formulation of different cleaning agents such as shampoo, dish washing and hand washing products and lotion formulation. During the production of polyethoxylated surfactants, 1,4-dioxane as a toxic and carcinogenic by-product is formed. A simple low-cost method based on headspace single-drop microextraction combined with gas chromatography–flame ionization detection was developed for the determination of 1,4-dioxane in surfactants and cleaning agents.
Methods : In this method, 1,4-dioxane was extracted from 8.0 mL sample solution into a microdrop of an organic solvent, and then, it was injected to gas chromatography. The effects of such parameters as the solvent type, salt addition, microdrop volume, stirring rate, equilibrium time, extraction time and the temperature of sample solution on the extraction performance were studied and optimized. An ethoxylated surfactant containing 1,4-dioxane was used as the sample for the optimization of the extraction parameters.
Results : The linear range, determination coefficient, limit of detection and relative standard deviation of the method were 0.5–100 ?g g?1, 0.9977, 0.4 ?g g?1 and 7.2% (n = 5), respectively. Different real samples including sodium lauryl ether sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), four brands of shampoo, and hand washing and dish washing liquids were analysed by the method. 1,4-Dioxane was detected at the concentration range of 2.4–201 ?g g?1 in the samples, except dish washing liquid and SLS.
Conclusion : A new method with the merits of simplicity, low cost, low organic solvent consumption, short analysis time, good repeatability and suitable detection limit was developed for the analysis of 1,4-dioxane in surfactants and cleaning agents.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Chemicals and reagents - Instrumentation - Extraction procedure (HS-SDME) - Real samples
