ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to improve existing polymeric materials, or to design new polymer-based products, one needs to be able to control the polymeric chains. Historically, ionic living and group transfer polymerisations have allowed the design of polymeric architectures with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular-weight distributions. However, these methods are difficult to undertake as they demand complex experimental conditions. Recently, living radical polymerisation (LRP) has been reported as an efficient living polymerisation process, based on free radical polymerisation chemistry. The wide range of monomers which have been successfully polymerised, the ease of scaling up a reaction, and the high tolerance to functional groups makes it the most suitable process to obtain well-defined architectures (eg polymers with well-known degrees of polymerisation, molecular-weight distribution, end functionalities, chain architectures and composition). LRP is more cost-effective and easier to manipulate than other existing living polymerisation methods, and is therefore the most viable process for industrial development. This paper presents the recent developments in this technique with potential for use in the surface coatings industry.

Revêtements protecteurs -- DétériorationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Protective organic coatings work by preventing contact between an aggressive environment and a vulnerable substrate. However, the long required lifetime of a barrier coating provides a challenge when attempting to evaluate coating performance. Diffusion cells can be used as a tool to estimate coating barrier properties and lifetime. In this work, a diffusion cell array was designed, constructed, and compared to previous designs, with simplicity being the most important design parameter. Sulfuric acid diffusion through five different coatings was monitored using a battery of cells, and a mathematical model was developed to simulate the experimental data and to study diffusion mechanisms. The diffusion cells allowed an objective and fast analysis of coating barrier properties. It was found that sulfuric acid deteriorated these properties as it diffused through the films. This was also expressed in the modeling results, where a three-step time dependency of the diffusion coefficient was required to simulate both acid breakthrough time and the subsequent steady-state flux. A vinyl ester-based coating proved to be the most effective barrier to sulfuric acid diffusion, followed by a polyurethane coating. Amine-cured novolac epoxies provided the least effective protection. Note de contenu : - PREVIOUS DIFFUSION CELL DESIGN

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The mechanical properties of pigmented coating layers are important in a variety of applications. However, the large number of parameters that influence these properties as well as the numerous types of deformations challenge the prediction of the performance of these systems. A discrete element method (DEM) is proposed to predict the mechanical properties of paper coating layers that have a range of starch and latex content. The model is developed in both 2D and 3D and is adapted to tensile and flexural deformations. The model predictions are compared to experimental results in the literature. The predictions are generally good for the moduli and the strain at failure of the systems, but underpredict the maximum stress. This result may be caused by the complex particle size distribution of the experimental systems or by the impact of the brittleness of the starch when making the freestanding films.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The information derived from impedance diagrams obtained by using electrochemical sensors specifically designed for lap joints testing of coated metallic sheets is analyzed. The electrochemical sensors were made by means of steel or zinc sheets, uncontaminated or contaminated with variable amounts of sodium chloride, and overcoated with organic coatings. Such sensors show the effect of the nature of the metallic substrate, the underfilm saline contamination, and the relative humidity of the environment outside the lap joint. The results show that the information obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on the behavior within the lap joints can be assessed by the criteria traditionally used for plain painted metal surfaces.By modeling the data, it is possible to discriminate between effects due to the organic coating and to the corrosion reaction at the metal-coating interface.
