Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In a previous paper a Low Salt Preservation (LSP) method of preserving New Zealand and Australian sheepskins was described and compared to the existing High Salt Preservation (HSP) method. The HSP method uses large amounts of sodium chioride plus combinations of biocides which are not registered in REACH regulations. In the previous trial the Australian skins were stacked flat with wool side against pelt side which caused some mildew to develop in the wool. In this trial using LSP, the skins were stacked in the conventional manner by folding down the back bone, flank to flank with the wool side out. The LSP process used 73% less salt than HSP and uses additives widely used in the food and beverage industries. No wool slip was found in the LSP preserved skins compared to 5% wool slip in the HSP skins and no mildewed areas were found in the LSP skins. These results confirm the efficacy of the LSP process. When finished as rugs there was more ‘wool tip colour’ on some LSP skins compared to HSP. If the wool tip is removed by shearing the underlying wool colour is the same for both LSP and HSP. Tannage Résumé : Melamine urea formaldehyde condensates or resin re-tanning agents are commonly used in the leather industry. They give rise to homogeneous filling, are easily and widely applicable, but generally contribute to free formaldehyde, measurable in emission or extraction methods. Many projects to resolve this issue have been carried out. The weakness of the resin re-tanning is the reversibility of the bond formation between formaldehyde and two amino groups. The formaldehyde forms a methylene group after condensation with two amino groups and releases water. This methylene group can be hydrolyzed under acidic conditions to release formaldehyde again, reversing the synthesis.
Melamine ethoxylates were found to be a formaldehyde free, stable, and easily applicable alternative. Besides the fact that they are made without formaldehyde, it proved to be possible to incorporate renewable components into their synthesis, giving rise to an even more sustainable product. Another sustainable aspect of this chemistry is the delivery of the potential product as a concentrated liquid versus most resin re-tanning agents being placed into the market as spray dried powders, consuming significant amounts of energy in the process.
Melamine ethoxylates show advantages in application on leather in comparison with classical resin re-tanning agents. An insight into the scope of application will be given, showing that melamine ethoxylates can be considered a formaldehyde free replacement for resin re-tanning agents.Note de contenu : - Melamine urea formaldehyde condensates

Tannage Résumé : Leather tanning reactions between collagen and dihydroxynaphthalenes (DHNs) or diphenols and oxazolidine have been investigated using hide powder and sheepskin pickled pelt. This investigation showed that some DHNs have a tanning effect on collagen. The measurement of combined and cross-linked DHNs on collagen showed that 30-40% 1,6- and 2,6-DHNs were fixed through covalent bonding. Shrinkage temperature of the leather changed little after the non combined DHNs had been removed from the leather, indicating that the high stability of the combination tanned leather comes from the covalent bonding formed between DHNs and collagen through oxazolidine.

Syntans
Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The results of conductometric and spectrophotometric investigations suggest that the Cr-Al synthetic tanning materials form micelles at a particular concentration below which they do not normally form.
The CMC is determined for Cr-Al syntan in aqueous as well as in different additive environments at different temperatures. With this micellisation concept. a new equation for the determination of the association constant (KA) for the mixed system is framed obeying the law of mass action principle. The validity of this equation is established in glycine, urea and NaCI environments as model systems. From the temperature dependence of the association constant and with the help of the Gibb’s equation, various thermodynamic parameters were estimated, The above analysis has also been modelled conceptually as a different phase. The thermodynamic parameters supported the transfer of Cr-Al svntan to glycine (at 25-54°C) and urea (at 25°C or below) containing sites, whereas the reverse is not true. The reverse is true for urea at temperatures above 25°C and for NaCI also (at 25-54°C). Evidence was also obtained for the Cr-Al syntan micelles to exist more freely in the hydrophilic group of glycine than that of urea. The special and peculiar properties of urea is invoked. tn the presence of urea, the destabilisation or stabilisation of Cr-Al syntan micelles has been observed through disruption or reorganisation of the hydrogen bond, which depends on temperature. It has also been seen that the concentration of Cr-Al syntan above CMC (preferably five to ten times of CMC) is useful for tanning processes whereas below CMC is not practically useful. The main aim for the preparation of Cr-Al syntan was to enhance the fixation of both Cr and Al, high shrinkage temperature and light fastness.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : The CMC of Cr-Al syntan in aqueous as ve1l as in presence of various additives environments and at various temperatures

Tannage Résumé : As an alternative to chrome tanning, and alter having carried out a study of the availability at a local and regional level, chemically unmodified pine bark could be used as a natural source of tannins in order to obtain a vegetable-tanned leather. The aim of this work was to design a pre-tanning formulation using pine bark powder. To increase the penetration of vegetable tannins and use short floats in vegetable tanning, while reducing overall tanning times, three types of synthetic agents were studied : a phenolic syntan, a disulphonic agent and a naphthalene sulphonic syntan. Once, having selected the most appropriate syntan, an experimental design was developed in order to obtain an optimised formulation based on pine bark powder and syntan. The optimal pre-tanning formulation uses a 15% offer of pine bark powder and 2.5% of naphthalene sulphonic agent. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY : Materials - Equipment - Methodology
